The final section of a walking and cycling route linking Dartmoor to Plymouth was opened to the public on Friday 28 November.

The development of the Clearbrook Ramp project, near Yelverton, has been the final hurdle in making Drake’s Trail, between Plymouth and Tavistock, accessible to all cyclists and less able users. This section of the off-road route has been funded by Devon County Council and the Department for Transport as part of the £7 million “Granite and Gears” programme designed to improve cycle access to, and within, Dartmoor National Park.

Dartmoor Railway, Okehampton Station

Inspired by the run-away hit movie produced by Warner Bros, this very special train ride is inspired by magic and designed to delight and inspire your family this festive season.

The Polar Express train makes a mystical round-trip journey to the North Pole. The characters of the story come to life with the conductor punching away at the children’s golden tickets, chefs dancing and delivering hot chocolate and cookies, and the doubting hobo wandering through the train. The story is read aloud and the music from the movie plays for all the kids to sing along.

More than six months after the National Review of Asthma Deaths highlighted the complacency about asthma care, research from Asthma UK published today shows that almost 8 out of 10 people in the South West are still not receiving care that meets the most basic clinical standards (79%).1 This is despite the fact that good basic asthma care prevents life-threatening asthma attacks and needless hospital admissions.

The research highlighted a shocking variation in care across the UK. Londoners fared worse than any other region, with only 14% of people in the capital receiving care that...

Haiti, an aid crisis, five years on

Nearly five years ago, Haiti was struck with a massive 7.0 scale earthquake that killed up to 300,000, and left 1.5 million homeless. Today however, it remains a country riven with problems, despite the promises of the biggest humanitarian mobilization of a generation.

When the disaster struck in 2010, I went to Haiti, and spent seven months working in the relief effort for an NGO, and saw the destruction first-hand. The reasons for its continuing problems despite massive aid relief lie not a lack of resources, or willing hands, but in the way we treat stricken countries in general...

An official opening ceremony has been held to mark the completion of the final stretch of the Exe Estuary Trail.

The final £1.6 million section of the trail, which links Turf Lock and Powderham, has seen the development of a three-metre wide off-road path and newly constructed bridge, near the existing level crossing at Powderham.

It means that the 16 mile route around the Estuary, can now be enjoyed in its entirety for the first time. The predominantly off-road network, designed by Devon County Council, now links Exmouth to Dawlish Warren, via Topsham and Exeter, and forms...
