Christians around the world, including here in Exeter, remember these events each year ahead of the joyous celebration of Easter. Future visitors to Exeter Cathedral will soon see a symbol of the city’s rugby club adorning part of its façade after a new stone carving was unveiled this week.

In what is an extensive project on the Cathedral’s East Gable, work has been going on for a number of months to address parts of the stonework that need replacing or re-conditioning.

And part of the project has been to replace four corbel stones, all of which are to now have a new look moving forward.

As Clerk of Works Chris Sampson explains: “The project we are currently working on will see us replace...

Essential work for Cathedral roof funded by WWI Centenary Grant

It was announced last week that Exeter Cathedral has been awarded £70,000 in the final phase of grants from the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund. The money will be used to fund the urgent removal of asbestos from roof spaces above the Cathedral’s Quire aisles and north porch, allowing the safe inspection and maintenance of spaces which have been inaccessible without strict control in recent years. Chris Sampson, the Cathedral’s Clerk of Works, said: “It is essential that our we are able to regularly and safely inspect all areas of the Cathedral as part of an ongoing...

Lasting symbol of Remembrance carved for Exeter Cathedral

A new carving of a poppy has been completed at Exeter Cathedral in time for Remembrance Sunday. The decorated “corbel” stone will eventually be added high up on the eastern end of the Cathedral as part of a major programme of works in that area of the building that was funded by the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund. It was carved from a block of Salcombe stone by Gary Morley who has been a member of the Cathedral’s team of masons for over 25 years. Salcombe stone was originally used in the building of the Cathedral and is still the prescribed material to be used whenever...
