THERE will be a celebratory feel when the 40th anniversary Dartmoor Folk Festival takes place in the foothills of Dartmoor at South Zeal, near Okehampton, from Friday to Sunday, August 11, 12 and 13.

It was 40 years ago that the festival was founded by the late Bob Cann, who lived in the parish of South Zeal. He had the dream of a folk event on his doorstep that would help to revive and preserve the music, song and dance traditions of Dartmoor.

Moor Otters auction now live

After an extremely successful launch at Bovey Castle last week, the Moor Otters can now be bid for online.

Bidding for all 100 Moor Otters opened on 1 June 2017.

Thirty of these, nicknamed the ‘Golden Otters’, will go on to a live auction hosted by Bearnes Hampton Littlewood on 30 September ’17, taking bids from the results of the online auction.

Dartmoor National Park hopes that auctioning off the 100 colourful Otters will raise invaluable funds for conservation and developing the work of the organisation across the vast National Park.

Property Search Group launches charity campaign for Vision Aid Overseas

Property Search Group is pleased to announce that, as part of its 20th birthday celebrations, the three South West offices have nominated Vision Aid Overseas to be their charity partner in 2017.

More than 640 million people worldwide cannot see properly simply because they need glasses. Ninety percent of the people affected live in developing countries. Vision Aid Overseas works with professional UK volunteers in five African countries to provide training to local eye care workers, to establish Vision Centres and to deliver outreach services in rural and isolated communities....

BP Portrait Award 2017 comes to Exeter

Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery will be the first venue outside London to host the BP Portrait Award 2017 exhibition.

Following its initial showing at the National Portrait Gallery, London, from 22 June to 24 September, the exhibition will be at RAMM from 4 October to 3 December followed by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and then Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens.

The three shortlisted artists were announced last week and all prize winners will be announced at an award ceremony at the National Portrait Gallery, London, on Tuesday 20 June...

Exeter City's home form must improve next season

Paul Tisdale successfully guided Exeter City to their first ever EFL playoff campaign this season and deserves tremendous credit for that achievement alone – even if his side managed to fall at the final hurdle in a brave 2-1 defeat to Blackpool at Wembley. However, a tilt at automatic promotion would surely have been possible if the Grecians hadn't dropped so many points at St James' Park over the course of the campaign.

Despite finishing an impressive fifth in League Two this season, Exeter have the seventh worst home form in the division, accumulating the same amount of points...

The San Miguel Picturehouse Pop-Up comes Double Locks, Exeter for a weekend of outdoor cinema.

The screenings take place in the open, with a limited number of deckchairs available on a first come first served basis. There will also be cardboard ‘bumbox’ seating available for sale but feel free to bring along small picnic chairs – however these must be placed towards the rear of the cinema area.

This is a fully licensed and catered event so no alcohol, food and drink is to be brought in from outside.

Double Locks will provide full bar and catering facilities....

Sidmouth Literary Festival announces bumper line up for 2017

THE amazing Christopher Biggins will launch the third Sun, Sea & Books literary festival in Sidmouth next month.

For the first time, the festival is spread over three days and different venues in the town, with Sidholme Hotel, Elysian Fields, hosting the launch roadshow from 10am until 2pm on Friday, June 23.

Christopher, who has appeared in many British TV classics, as well as being one of the Grand Dames of panto, will be interviewed by highly respected local broadcaster, Judi Spiers.

Apprentices from IBM have been named National Finalists in the search for the apprentice team of the year, after being the highest scoring team in the South East.
