Citizens Advice Exeter says Universal Credit announcement “encouraging” but “must go further”

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, is warning that hundreds of people in the city could still face financial hardship despite changes to Universal Credit announced by the Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd.

Universal Credit rolls together six existing (or legacy) benefits into a single claim and one monthly payment; replacingincome-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment & Support Allowance, Housing Benefit, Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Income Support.

Improved toilets for Princesshay

Princesshay has announced a planned refurbishment of its toilets.

The Princesshay toilets in Catherine Square will be temporarily closed for refurbishment from 28th January 2019. Alternative facilities will be available for customers close by in Catherine Street.

Princesshay also provides the only Changing Places toilet in the city centre, providing facilities with extra equipment and space to meet the needs of all people with a disability. The Donkey Sanctuary is celebrating 50 years since it was founded by its inspirational visionary: Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE.

The international animal welfare charity and award winning visitor attractioncelebrates its golden anniversary with a whole host of special events throughout 2019. The anniversary celebrations will be launched on 23 January, which would have been Dr Svendsen’s 89th birthday.

Devon County Council has launched a public consultation on its draft Exeter Transport Strategy.

The strategy is being updated to reflect current travel trends and the needs of communities. It will aim to provide a sustainable transport system which supports continued growth in the city but also enhances the environment for residents, pedestrians and cyclists.

Exeter City sign Jaden Brown on loan until the end of the season

Exeter City have signed Huddersfield Town full-back Jaden Brown on loan until the end of the season.

The highly-rated defender has represented England at under-19 level and is known for his pace and ability to get and up and down the wing.

Help Exeter builders merchant come out on top in fundraising challenge

The Exeter branch of RGB Building Supplies is holding a day of fundraising on Thursday 31st January as it aims to raise as much money as possible for Children’s Hospice South West.

All 20 RGB branches are taking part in the charity’s £50 Challenge where they will go head-to-head against each other to see which depot can raise the most amount of money, after spending no more than £50 on developing a fundraising activity.

The Exeter branch is inviting customers and the local community to visit and help staff with their fundraising efforts.

New heritage trail for Dawlish

Dawlish residents and visitors can now explore the history of the area with a new heritage trail around the town.

The Dawlish Heritage Trail has been developed by Teignbridge, with funding from the Coastal Communities Fund and Devon County Council. Designed for adults and children, the trail has 14 information points.
