Torquay school teacher conquers 203-mile trek

Last year 54-year old special school teacher Edward Thompson from Torquay set out to walk round Dartmoor on foot and climb 100 tors in 10 days for charity while living rough on the moor.

203 miles and over 105 hours of walking later, he had conquered 156 tors, walking at an average speed of 1.93 mph, and raising over £3,000 for the charity Dream-A-Way in the process.

Now, on the back of that success, Edward has set his sights on visiting a marathon 200 tors, hills and rocks in 10 days, a feat that will require him walking for up to 12 hours a day in order to complete a...

People urged to be prepared as more rain forecast

The Environment Agency is urging people to be prepared for possible localised flooding as more heavy rain is due to reach the South West later today and into tomorrow.

High ground in Dartmoor and Exmoor, in Devon, is most likely to be affected, and strong winds could lead to some disruption along the coast as waves and spray come over the top of defences.

There are currently seven Flood Warnings and 43 Flood Alerts in place across the South West, although this is predicted to increase.

With estimates of an average of 30 mm on Exmoor, and a maximum of 51 mm by...

Road users urged to travel with caution

Commuters and other road users are being urged to take care around Devon this evening as heavy snow is forecast.

Devon County Council, the Highways Agency, and Devon and Cornwall Police are advising drivers to check the weather forecast and road conditions before they set out.

Devon's roads improving but beware icy conditions

Road conditions have improved throughout the day with all the main routes passable with care.

Higher parts of the county, on Dartmoor and especially Exmoor, are however still experiencing some difficulties, as well as the A39 Lynton to County Gate, and highways teams are working hard to improve those situations.

Gritters are out on most main routes tonight and again tomorrow morning, as road temperatures are set to fall below freezing.

Icy conditions are expected, particularly in the northern and eastern parts of the county.

Motorists are being reminded of...

Last call for Dartmoor cuckoos

Dartmoor National Park is a stronghold for the cuckoo which has suffered a huge decline in the UK in recent years. Earlier in the year we asked you to help us by letting us know when and where you have heard a cuckoo on Dartmoor. This is so we can build up a better picture of their movements and perhaps begin to understand what is causing this national decline.

So far this year we have gathered over 1,000 records on Dartmoor alone, with nearly 200 more for the rest of Devon. However, this amazing number of records doesn’t mean that there are over 1,000 cuckoos in Dartmoor National...
