Safety on Dartmoor day

Local rescue charities and branches of emergency services, National Trust and Dartmoor National Park Authority are holding their third safety on Dartmoor day at Lydford Gorge near Tavistock on Sunday 22 June between 10am and 5pm.

On the day, there will be the opportunity to look round fire engines, police cars and ambulances plus meet the local fire fighters, police officers, air ambulance crew and rescue dogs. Join Layland and Gill Branfield on a 2 hour walk round Moorlands Farm, near Two Bridges. Hear about the life of a Dartmoor farmer and see the livestock, farming systems, habitats and historic features on this traditional high Dartmoor Farm. Name the Cuckoo at County Show

Three more cuckoos were successfully tagged on Dartmoor last week, the first to be tagged in the UK this year as part of a national programme managed by the British Trust for Ornithology.

This project is using new technology to uncover some of the mysteries of their migration routes, use of stop-over sites for refuelling along the way and the timings of the different legs of their journeys.

Two of the satellite tags are being sponsored by Devon Birds, with a third satellite tag being sponsored by Dartmoor National Park Authority.

One of the Dartmoor cuckoos which were tagged and tracked last year on the long journey to their African wintering grounds is now home.

The Dartmoor cuckoo project which began with the tagging of four Dartmoor birds last year is still waiting for Tor to return. It is thought that his tag's battery has now degraded so although it is likely that he is still alive, we may not be able to track him back to Dartmoor.

The Dartmoor cuckoos which were tagged and tracked last year on the long journey to their African wintering grounds are now heading home.

Walk with a Dartmoor Farmer

Huccaby Farm near Dartmeet is the venue for a farmer-led walk on Wednesday 23 April at 2pm.

With the hard work of lambing over, Dave and Shirley Mudge will show you round their traditional Dartmoor farm. This is a rare chance to look round an historic hill farm which is usually closed to the public.

The two hour walk is most suited to adults and older children; it is unfortunately not suitable for people with buggies or wheelchairs.
