Illustrated talk: World War II bomber crash on Hameldown

On 21 March 1941 a Hampden bomber crashed on Hameldown, near Widecombe-in-the-Moor, on its way back to base. Seventy years later John Lowe, a retired RAF policeman is trying to piece together the events of that night and reflect on the young aircrew who lost their lives.

Join him for an illustrated talk to discover the detective work he’s undertaken and find out how Moor than meets the eye has helped to undertake a geophysical survey to look more closely at the crash site.

Free guided walk celebrating the wonders of Dartmoor

On Sunday 19 October BBC Radio Devon have teamed up with Dartmoor National Park Rangers to offer a FREE guided walk celebrating the wonders of Dartmoor on a visit to Tavy Cleave.

This superb high moorland valley where the young River Tavy carves its way through the moor is a fascinating place to explore. Discover the secrets of this place, the wildlife to be found and its history of ancient human occupation in the company of someone who knows it well - a National Park Ranger.

Cycle with Moor care in National Park

Dartmoor National Park Authority is asking for views on a new code of conduct for cycling within the National Park.

The new code provides a simple set of guidelines aimed to encourage responsible cycling within the National Park for both on and off road cyclists. The National Park produces a series of codes for all the most popular activities enjoyed on Dartmoor and with a huge increase in the use of the moor and its road network for cycling there is a need to provide information to help with awareness.

Visitors to the Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centre, Princetown can see a stunning new exhibtion by photographers Adrian Oakes and Anna Curnow.

The exhibition contains images of Dartmoor's prehistoirc heritage including burials, stone circles, stone rows, settlements and standing stones.

These relics of our ancient ancestors can be found in such numbers on the moor that the National Park is considered one of the most important areas in western Europe for prehistoric archaeology.

Boost for rare Dartmoor bird

A new bird study on Dartmoor reveals dunlin numbers have increased in response to efforts to restore the moor's famous mires.

The dunlin is a small wading bird. They breed across northern Europe, Russia and North America, but globally their most southerly breeding location is on Dartmoor. In the UK their population numbers 9,600 pairs and they are completely reliant on good quality blanket bog for breeding.

Countryfile explores Dartmoor

Countryfile comes from Devon on Sunday (21 September) where Matt Baker discovers the story of a Second World War bomber which crashed on the moor and hears about one man's mission to find the truth behind what happened on that fateful night.

Matt helps with a geophysics search of the site to see if the key to the crash can be unearthed. The continued research into the crash site is just one of the projects being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the Moor than meets the eye project on Dartmoor

Cross the threshold of Higher Uppacott, Dartmoor National Park’s Grade 1 Listed longhouse, and step back in time to medieval Dartmoor as part of Heritage Open Days 2014. This year Dartmoor National Park has arranged a number of free visits to this unique building as its contribution to the national heritage celebration which runs from 11 to 14 September 2014.

A longhouse is a medieval farmhouse in which both people and cattle were accommodated under a single roof. Higher Uppacott is rare and of national importance. It is one of the few remaining examples of this historic building...

Record crowds at Dartmoor Folk Festival PICS

Record crowds enjoyed three days of music, song, dance and crafts at the 37th Dartmoor Folk Festival held from August 8 to 10.

Local and national artists entertained audiences at the event held at South Zeal, near Okehampton.

The festival included concerts, dances, a Dartmoor Fayre, a ceilidh, folk service, craft displays, music hall, pub sessions, a ramble on Dartmoor and music, song and dance workshops.

The packed programme of events also included a dedicated children’s festival.
