More than two in five runners in the South West (42%) say running has been good for their mental health during the pandemic – with 10% saying they wouldn't have been able to get through the last year without it.

However, research by running specialists, Runners Need, shows that 16% of South West runners said they have found it harder to stay motivated during lockdown without organised races to look forward to.

With almost a fifth of people (18%) in the South West enjoying running challenges and enjoying recording their run using an app (24%) – combined with all the...

Charity desk cycle fundraiser starts for Exeter firm

Devon digital advertising agency, Launch Online, is supporting the FORCE Cancer Charity Autumn Bike Ride initiative this November, but rather than being out on the road, its staff will be pedalling their little socks off from underneath their desks.

With the help of a fleet of mini pedal exercisers, which fit underneath the desk, the team will pedal as far as they can over the four weeks of lockdown while they work.

Every week the leading cyclist will wear a yellow jersey, a nod to the tradition that exists in the Tour de France where the best rider is recognised by...

Facing up to difficult change

It feels like I’ve been campaigning for social and ecological justice nearly all my adult life. I have tried to criticise what I consider to be wrong and attempted to live alternative possibilities.

For fifty plus years I’ve been marching against Apartheid, Racism, Poverty and Weapons of Mass Destruction. With many others I’ve been standing up for human rights and greater equalities. We have opposed violence and proposed peaceful ends to conflicts. We have been condemning environmental destruction and wasteful lifestyles whilst promoting more sustainable agricultural, energy, and...

At the recent Exeter Diocesan clergy conference our three Bishops participated in a panel answering questions from the floor on a variety of contemporary topics. One of those raised was, ‘what are the greatest social challenges facing the people of Devon who we seek to serve at this time ?’ The Bishops responded with helpful comments such as our ageing population, new housing developments, pressures on land-use and the future of farming, as well as health concerns including dementia, loneliness and mental well-being. Their replies prompted me to think about my own response and, whilst not...
