Learn Devon's adult learners celebrate GCSE results

It wasn’t only secondary school students across the county who received their GCSE results yesterday (Thursday 24 August) - Learn Devon's adult learners were also collecting theirs.

Across all four of Learn Devon's centres - Bideford, Exmouth, Newton Abbot and Tavistock - adult learners dropped in to pick up their results and celebrate their efforts with staff, tutors and their families.

Among those celebrating at the Kennaway Centre in Exmouth after getting her grades was Natasha Cox, who got the Maths GCSE qualification she wanted.

Jay Blades joins forces with literacy charity to inspire adults to learn to read

Repair Shop presenter Jay Blades is taking part in a new BBC documentary which will follow his journey as he faces up to the challenge of learning to read as an adult with charity Read Easy UK.

Jay concealed his inability to read until he was in his 30s, after he struggled to learn to read as a child. Jay is not alone - a quarter of all children in England leave primary school (1), like Blades, unable to read to the expected level. Nearly seven million adults in the UK have very poor literacy skills (2). Many are too ashamed or embarrassed to come forward and ask for help....

East Devon District Council and LED are proud to announce that Seaton’s new Jurassic themed adventure golf course at Seafield Gardens, is now ready for play and will be opened officially at 10.30am on Friday 7 April, although people will be able to play on it from 1 April 2017.

Built on the site of the former putting green, the course’s eye-catching design features plenty of fun Jurassic themed course decorations and timber or stone obstacles, in the shape of stone fossils, dinosaur bones, dinosaur eggs, rocks/boulders and fossil style edging of the golfing areas.

Outdoor Explorer Club launches at Killerton

The National Trust is launching an Outdoor Explorer Club for kids at the Killerton estate near Exeter. The club is all about adventures and exploring – with no parents allowed.

The importance of outdoor experiences in childhood is part of the National Trust’s strategy to engage young people with nature as part of its Land, Outdoors and Nature programme. One of the goals the Trust has set itself is to re-connect children with nature, which benefits physical and mental wellbeing.

New start for local folk choir

An Exeter singing group is set for big changes from this September. Run by Devon music charity Wren Music under their Voices In Common banner, the Exeter Folk Choir VOICES IN COMMON is getting a new look, including a new venue, new songs, and is ready to welcome new members.

The new look choir will be based at the Exeter Community Centre, 17 St David's Hill, Exeter EX4 3RG. The group was the first folk choir that Wren Music formed a couple of decades ago and over its long history, the choir has travelled widely, made CDs, been on residential weekends and welcomed other choirs...
