More misery for household as energy bills rise

Average winter gas bill will be up by £132 on a year ago to around £460 because of the extended cold spell.

The figures were compiled by economist Alan Clarke of the wholesale banking division of Scotiabank, Scotia Capital and do not factor in price rises which could come later this year.

Mr Clarke said average household gas use was up by some 30 per cent between January and March compared with a year ago. On top of that gas tariffs are now around 8 per cent higher.

Based on these calculations, he estimates that the average gas bill for the first three months of...

Lack of food and cold weather killing rare birds

Wildlife is suffering the effects of an exceptionally late spring with rare birds found dead and summer warblers absent from the countryside.

The bodies of eight stone-curlews (pictured) – one of the UK's most threatened birds – have been found in fields in Norfolk, Suffolk and Wiltshire in the past few days.

The birds are believed to have returned from their wintering grounds in Africa and Spain and struggled to find enough food to survive. The bodies weighed around 300 g, compared to a healthy weight of 450 g.

This follows the deaths of hundreds of puffins and...

Feeling stressed after a tough week? Exeter academic's book may offer answers

Today, many people consider stress to be part of life, yet most of us have little understanding of what the concept means or where it comes from.

In his new book The Age of Stress, University of Exeter historian Professor Mark Jackson explores the history of scientific studies of stress and how stress became a buzzword of the modern world.

The Age of Stress reveals how the science of stress and our experiences of stressful life events have both been shaped by a wide range of socio-political and cultural, as well as biological, factors.

The book provides a history of...

"Send this Idiot the Bedbug letter"

Have you heard the story of the colossal customer-service bungle over the “bedbug letter”? A guest in a hotel finds himself attacked by bedbugs during his stay. He writes an angry letter to the president of the hotel company. Within days, the president sends the guest a heartfelt apology, which reads, in part: “I can assure you that such an event has never occurred before in our hotel. I promise you it will never happen again.” Sounds good, except for one small detail: Included with the apology is the guest’s original letter. Scrawled across the top is the message: “Send this idiot the...

Working from home presents many challenges: What is an acceptable time to get out of bed? Which Australian soap opera should I work my lunch around? Does posting a Facebook status really count as business development? But quite possibly the biggest challenge is what boring clichéd local disc jockey should I tolerate for a couple of hours?

Whether it is the background soundtrack to my working day or the drive time escape, music plays an integral part of not only mine- but most people’s existence. Yes, I enjoy a Radio 1 chart topper as much as the next guy and sure Jeremy Vine’s...

Alcott forced to retire due to injury

Exeter Chiefs hooker Simon Alcott has today spoken of his disappointment after it was confirmed he will have to retire from the game with immediate effect due to a neck injury.
