Devon-based folk musician Jim Causley has recorded an album of the poetry of his distant relative, the celebrated Cornish poet Charles Causley who died ten years ago, set to music and recorded in his house in Launceston. He used Causley Senior’s old piano and recorded with Julie Murphy of Fernhill and Ceri Owen-Jones as well as guitarist Pete Berryman and Cornish group Dalla. Jim, Julie and Ceri are now touring the show, based around Julie and Jim singing the material and accompaniment on piano, harp, accordion, fiddle and trombone.

Devon residents to be offered free health checks

Devon County Council is rolling out a programme of health checks for almost 50,000 Devon residents aged between 40 and 74. The NHS health checks are part of a programme aimed at early detection and reduction of some of the most common lifestyle-related conditions including heart, liver and kidney disease. The check will initially be offered by GP surgeries, but over time may also be offered at other venues in communities across the county. Suspicious fire in Tiverton prompts police appeal

A joint Police and Fire Service investigation has been launched following a fire that damaged four properties in Tiverton. The fire broke out at Magnolia Court at around 4pm yesterday (Tuesday, 23 July 2013). The fire, which is being treated as suspicious, spread to four properties, causing extensive damage to one house. No-one was injured. A 30-year-old local man was arrested in connection with the incident and was later released on Police bail until 25 September 2013. UK universities partnership deemed the best in Europe at fostering start-ups

Heavitree paddling pools to close on Thursday for essential maintenance

Exeter City Council has announced that Heavitree Paddling Pools will be closed for the day tomorrow (25 July) to allow for the water to be changed.

But fear not, as the pools should be back in action on Friday (26 July), ready for the busy summer period.

The pools have seen thousands of users over the last few weeks during the exceptionally hot weather. The high number of users has resulted in a build up of sun tan lotion on the sides of the pools.

A new acquisition to the museum’s collection is a fossil footprint called a Cheirothere. It was found near Sidmouth in the Otter Sandstone (Triassic about 240 million years ago) and precedes the dinosaurs.The print and some less well preserved examples were discovered by Bob Coram of Swanage who made the donation to the RAMM.

Cheirotheres have been known from the Triassic rocks of the Midlands but this is the first recorded occurrence in the Triassic rocks of southern England.
