The truth about SPF

With this summer heat comes decisions, decisions! Making good decisions now can save you from premature ageing and possibly worse later on, so choose wisely. Which sun cream is most effective? Which sunscreens won't break you out?

If you can't stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm, make sure you are wearing an SPF suitable for your skin tone. It's common knowledge that the darker you are, the more melanin you have in your skin. Melanin is the component in skin which makes you tan. The tanning action of the skin is actually a sign of damage and is the body's...

Parking income critical for investment, says City Council

Exeter City Council has criticised the Government and the RAC Foundation for misleading tax payers over the collection and expenditure of income from parking. This comes in response to an RAC Foundation report released today that says the vast majority of local authorities in England generate a surplus from their parking charges. The release of the data also follows government figures, released on Wednesday, showing that English councils' income from parking charges and fines is likely to continue to rise.

Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles said: "This municipal parking profit...

Exeter Lord Mayor ditches real fur-lined ceremonial robes in support of animal welfare

After receiving a letter from PETA explaining the cruelty involved in fur production as well as the British public's overwhelming opposition to the use of fur, the Lord Mayor of Exeter confirmed to PETA that she does not wear robes containing real fur and that the two ceremonial fur robes worn by civic officers will not be replaced when they come to the end of their life cycle sometime soon. PETA is sending Cllr Lyons a box of vegan chocolates. "It's important that public figures set a positive example, and by saying no to fur, the Lord Mayor of Exeter has made it clear that animals...

My visit to Exeter Foodbank

I recently spent an hour with the volunteers who run Exeter Foodbank and some of the families who depend on them. I have to say, I found some of the scenes I witnessed and stories I heard shocking in the 21st Century in a relatively affluent city like Exeter in one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

Between April 2012 and March 2013, the number of people using Exeter Foodbank, which operates out of the Mint Methodist Church, rose by 78%. Since April's changes to the Social Security system there has been a further trebling of the number of people using the service. Contrary...

Council re-oxygenates canal in response to fish deaths

Devon County Council has responded to a recent spate of fish deaths at the Grand Western Canal near Sampford Peverell by taking action to re-oxygenate the water in that section of the Canal.

Several hundred small roach and a number of larger roach and pike died recently when oxygen levels in the canal dramatically declined.

The problem was caused by a natural algal bloom that grew towards the end of the recent spell of hot sunny weather.

When the sunny spell ended and the weather turned cloudy, the algae stopped producing as much oxygen, but continued to deplete...

A sketch of Spain

“I've never seen an English person smile. Is that because of their bad teeth?”

It came as a bit of a shock when, during my year abroad in Spain, I discovered the stereotypes that Spanish people have of the English. As well as poor dental hygiene, they seem to believe we are a race of silent, serious people, who drink tea from dawn till dusk while discussing the Royal Family. We are also stressed all the time and definitely have no idea how to 'fiesta'.

Now, I agree that the Spanish are champions of partying, but a main factor in this, of course, is the differences between...
