Romanian policeman receives award for donkey rescue

Romanian policeman, Petrescu Vasile from Constanta, received an award through The Donkey Sanctuary’s Romanian project, for recognition of his contribution to animal welfare, after he rescued a severely neglected donkey and informed The Donkey Sanctuary of the animal cruelty he had witnessed. The donkey was found by a roadside in Constanta, collapsed on one side having being repeatedly beaten. He was unable to get up or pull his owner’s cart, with infected wounds on his legs from frequent beatings. The donkey now named Jonny is currently in the care of The Donkey Sanctuary. Motorcyclist dies after collision with a car in Paignton

Police were called to a road traffic collision which occurred just prior 2am this morning (Sunday 4 August) on Kings Ash Road in Paignton. The collision occurred between a small hatchback car and a motorcycle. The motorcyclist, a 19-year-old man from Buckfast, was treated by paramedics who attended the scene and medical staff at Torbay hospital but tragically died later this morning.

Yesterday (Saturday 3 August) saw the arrival of a rather unusual breed of tourist to the streets, parks and open spaces of Exeter. Welcomed by young and old alike, 11 life-sized gorilla sculptures have taken up residence around the City of Exeter as part of the Great Gorillas Project - an art trail created to help celebrate Paignton Zoo's 90th Birthday as well as raise funds and awareness for the Zoo's vital conservation work spanning the globe.

A debut goal by Sam Parkin rounded off an opening-day win for Exeter City against local rivals Bristol Rovers.

City had gone ahead initially in the second half through captain Danny Coles, who thundered a header into the net.

Twitter's UK rep apologises to women for on-line abuse

Twitter has apologised to the women who have encountered violent abuse on Twitter from a number of anonymous users.

Tony Wang the General Manager of Twitter UK offered an unequivocal apology for the abuse some women have been subjected to, saying it "was not acceptable in the real world and it's not acceptable on Twitter".

The history of Newtown will be revealed at the cafe in Belmont Park on Sunday 11 August. An exhibition, entitled ‘Newtown through the Ages’ will show how the area has developed over the centuries from the Roman period to present day. Newtown certainly has a lot more history than what might be expected.

The cafe is open from 2pm-4pm and is followed by a historical guided walk of the local area starting at 4.15pm at the hut in Belmont Park.
