James Phillips says he is ready to repay the faith shown in him by the Exeter Chiefs coaching staff as he looks to play a key role for the Aviva Premiership club this season. Having seen his campaign last season blighted by a knee injury sustained in the home game with Saracens, the imposing forward is now back to full fitness and keen to make up for lost time.

The Bristol-born star featured for 40 minutes in Exeter’s 23-15 friendly win at Scarlets last weekend and he will get another run out against his hometown club in this weekend’s latest pre-season game...

The Special Olympics Flame of Hope is coming to Princesshay, Exeter on Saturday 24 August at 2pm. The flame is making its journey to Bath, Somerset for the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics National Games 2013. Join in the fun from 10am in Princesshay Square with sporting events aplenty.

The Flame of Hope is the symbol of the Special Olympics. It is used in much the same spirit as the Olympic Flame at the Olympic Games.

WEA Course: Drawing from RAMM’s Collection

This course will focus on making drawings and mixed media artworks in response to RAMM’s collection. Tutor Nicci Wonnacott will lead a journey through a different area of RAMM each week, considering the historical, geographical and creative ideas that tell the story of the object.

American crime writer, Elmore Leonard dies aged 87

The American author Elmore Leonard, who wrote the crime novels, Get Shorty and Out Of Sight, has died at the age of 87 according to a brief statement on his website. He had been recovering after a recent stroke.

Born in New Orleans, Elmore John Leonard Jr. began writing westerns in the 1950s, before becoming one of the most popular and critically acclaimed crime writers of his generation. He also wrote a number short stories - several also adapted for the screen - and screenplays for film and television.

Defra appoints academic to oversee flood risks in South West

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has appointed an academic from the University of Exeter to Chair the South West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (RFCC). Professor Robert Van de Noort’s appointment is a reflection of his extensive research in the dynamics of coasts, rivers and peatlands, and how people have interacted with these landscapes over a period of more than 10,000 years, in addition to his various roles across the sector.
