Take That star and X-Factor judge Gary Barlow has visited British military personnel on operations in Camp Bastion this week.

Barlow spent a 3 days with sailors, soldiers and airmen, both regular and reservist, experiencing life on the base while filming a musical concert for broadcast later this year. Otterton Mill to feature in new series of BBC Two's Celebrity Antiques Roadtrip

Otterton Mill is to feature in the brand new series of BBC Two's Celebrity Antiques Roadtrip.

The show, which airs next Monday (4 November), follows celebrity couple Phil Vickery and Fern Britton, as they scour Devon antique shops for treasures that will make them a profit.

The ancient Mill played host to TV cameras earlier this year, when it provided a stop-off point for Phil and antiques expert James Braxton.

30ft burning effigy of Katie Hopkins

A town in Kent is burning a 30ft effigy of former Apprentice contestant Katie Hopkins in its annual bonfire night celebrations.

The giant steel framed model will be stuffed with fireworks and oil stuffed paper before being lit on Saturday (2 November).

Devon based Hopkins has drawn widespread criticism for her views childhood obesity and children’s names is the latest in a long line of famous (and infamous) figures to be burnt in the Kent town of Edenbridge.

Former guy’s include Wayne Rooney, disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong and Cherie Blair.

The University of Exeter alongside other UK universities will face widespread disruption today in a co-ordinated strike action by the UCU, UNISON and Unite trade Unions. Classes have been cancelled as staff have said they will walk out in protest of pay condition. Man jailed for smuggling £3.9m worth of heroin

A British man has been jailed for 12 years for attempting to smuggle £3.9 million of heroin through Manchester Airport,

A joint operation by the National Crime Agency and Border Force it was one of the largest single amounts caught coming through.

Muhammad Khalid, 43, from Birmingham was caught with 24 kilos of the Class A drug on June 7 this year.

South West commuters to get smart ticket technology

Rail Commuters in the South West will be able to use modern smart ticketing ticketing technology from next year. A new government investment of £3.25 million will allow South West Trains to upgrade its ticketing system at all its stations outside of London. Similar to the Oyster card system on the London Underground commuters will be able to avoid queues by paying ticket fares online and in advance.
