Hospital gains good feedback after updating patient letters to make them clearer

Staff at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust have undertaken the mammoth task of re-writing more than 8,000 patient letters to make them more user-friendly.

Previously, many patients would read the first line of the letter with the specifics of the appointment but didn’t read beyond this. It took the three-person Central Support Team at the RD&E ten months to re-work the letter for all departments, making it read more simply and highlighting the key messages such as what to bring to the appointment. On Sunday 24 November, A la Ronde, near Exmouth, launches its third annual community Christmas Tree Festival.

Local organisations are invited to bring a decorated tree to be displayed in the grounds until 15 December.

The idea is to raise awareness of your organisation in the local area and to convey key messages about what you do to other participants and A la Ronde’s many visitors during the run up to Christmas.

John Hart to warn Exeter of council's spending cuts

Devon County Council leader, John Hart, is meeting people in Exeter next week to deliver a stark warning on upcoming cuts.

Mr Hart has warned that due to the scale of these cuts there could be ‘no sacred cows’ and “Anyone who thinks we can carry on providing the same level of services while making those sort of cuts is, frankly, living in cloud cuckoo land.”

Yesterday the Local Government Association which represents 373 councils in England and Wales, demanded that the Chancellor George Osborne allow for a period of financial stability before making any further cuts....

A Mid Devon District Councillor has stepped down from his party after allegations of assualt have emerged.

Cllr John Squire, who serves the Yeo Ward near Crediton is alleged to have committed the offenses at a Crediton Address in July earlier this year. He has yet to be arrested or be formally charged but it has been confirmed that Squire has stepped down from the Conservative group.

Best bathing water quality for seven years

Bathing water quality across the South West is at its best for seven years.

Out of 145 designated bathing waters sampled in the South West Water region, covering Devon, Cornwall and Lyme Regis in Dorset, 144 or 99.3% met or exceeded the minimum European water quality standard and 132 or 91% met the tighter guideline standard.

This is a significant improvement on last year’s results, when 133 or 91% met the minimum standard and 91 or 62% met guideline.

Last night, Neil Parish MP, presented the Rural Fair Share Petition signed by the residents of Tiverton and Honiton. The Rural Fair Share campaign is calling on the Government to address the ongoing disparity in funding between rural and urban areas.

The campaign is set up to counter policies such as the rural penalty which sees urban areas receive 50% more support per head than rural areas.
