Sidmouth Primary School pupils put their Planning hats on...

Twenty pupils from Sidmouth Primary School had a go at taking Planning decisions when they visited East Devon District Council.

The seven-year-olds, with their teacher Mrs Hammond, spent a morning at EDDC’s Knowle headquarters learning about Planning and Development as part of a school topic. They received help and guidance from council staff and from Councillor Christine Drew, EDDC Member Champion for Children and Young People (see photo).

The children had a look at current maps of Sidmouth and found where they lived, then were given maps from 80 years ago and 130 years...

More Government funding needed to deal with flooding legacy in Devon

The impact of last year’s major flooding in Devon will be felt for the next four years, Devon County Council’s Cabinet heard today (Wed 9 Oct) as further calls were made for additional Government funding for roads.

Councillors have agreed proposals to deal with the legacy left by the major flood events in 2012/13, in which Devon’s highways sustained almost £18 million of damage.

Around £12.2 million was spent in the immediate aftermath on clearing debris from roads and drains, patching roads, reinstating embankments and repairing bridges, roads and culverts. Devon received...

Neil Parish MP opens new bowls centre

Neil Parish MP formally opened Mid Devon Indoor Bowls Club’s new playing surface on 5 October at an event also attended by Tiverton Mayor Janet Rendle and local councillor Neal Davey.

Before cutting the ribbon Neil Parish gave a short speech in which he said: “This is a wonderful facility with a very warm and welcoming feel and I’m delighted to have had the opportunity to perform the opening ceremony." Tiverton High School year 7 students had a unique opportunity to play bowls with England national bowlers. Lily Sinclair and Lucy Bristow played a bowls match with England players...

Cranbrook’s first community building opening soon

The first community building in Cranbrook is now complete and the asset has been handed over to East Devon District Council which intends to open the doors to the Younghayes Centre in time for the community’s Hallowe’en pumpkin party.

Following a delay with the handover of the building due to legal technicalities, Councillor Paul Diviani, Leader of East Devon District Council, was today delighted to hear that the building now belongs to East Devon.

He said: “Thank the Lord! Every day a false hope dawned but at long last we have the keys to the doors of the Younghayes Centre...

We willl get together ahead of Salisbury Playhouse's The Recruiting Officer to read the script over a coffee.

This group is suitable for anyone who loves drama, wants to meet people and get to grips with plays they may not have heard or seen before.

The session will be held in Peter Chalk 1.1 seminar room in the Peter Chalk Centre on Streatham Campus.
