Councillor steps down from party after assault allegations

A Mid Devon District Councillor has stepped down from his party after allegations of assualt have emerged.

Cllr John Squire, who serves the Yeo Ward near Crediton is alleged to have committed the offenses at a Crediton Address in July earlier this year. He has yet to be arrested or be formally charged but it has been confirmed that Squire has stepped down from the Conservative group.

Best bathing water quality for seven years

Bathing water quality across the South West is at its best for seven years.

Out of 145 designated bathing waters sampled in the South West Water region, covering Devon, Cornwall and Lyme Regis in Dorset, 144 or 99.3% met or exceeded the minimum European water quality standard and 132 or 91% met the tighter guideline standard.

This is a significant improvement on last year’s results, when 133 or 91% met the minimum standard and 91 or 62% met guideline.

Local MP presets petition to defend rural spending

Last night, Neil Parish MP, presented the Rural Fair Share Petition signed by the residents of Tiverton and Honiton. The Rural Fair Share campaign is calling on the Government to address the ongoing disparity in funding between rural and urban areas.

The campaign is set up to counter policies such as the rural penalty which sees urban areas receive 50% more support per head than rural areas. Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter says he is ready to unleash a group of players this weekend who are "chomping at the bit" to get some competitive rugby under their belts.

UPDATE: Body found is identified as missing Chudleigh man

06/11/13 Update: The Police have confirmed that the body found was that of missing man Mike Vincent.

A body is reported to have been found in Chudleigh following a police appeal for help in tracing a missing man.

Police have been looking for Mike Vincent, aged 64 years, who has been missing from Chudleigh, Devon, since Thursday 31st October 2013.

The body has yet to be formally identified but Mr Vincent's family has been informed.

Following the long-running success of BBC Two’s living history series, Victorian, Edwardian and Wartime Farm, a new series will be exploring life at the end of the Middle Ages in Tudor Monastery Farm. University of Exeter historian Professor James Clark was the programme consultant for the six part series in which he features onscreen as the team’s guide and mentor from the monastery, dressed in an authentic medieval habit. Devon ranked top in highways survey

Devon County Council has for the first time been ranked the country’s top performing local authorities for highways and transport services, according to a national survey.

Devon was among 70 highway authorities, including 25 county councils, which took part in the 2013 National Highways and Transport Public Satisfaction Survey (NHT Survey).

Action on litter in two of Exeter's parks

Exeter City Council and Exeter College are joining forces in an effort to combat the problem of littering in Northernhay Gardens and Bury Meadows Park.

The council and the college have been tackling the issue which they believe is caused by a small minority of young people who fail to behave responsibly.

Council staff regularly engage with people using the parks, asking them to put their rubbish in the bins provided.
