Raise awareness of Down Syndrome with a Blue Ribbon

An Exeter local has come up with a unique way of raising awareness of what Down Syndrome is and what it means to have the condition as part of World Down Syndrome Day.

World Down Syndrome Day, which takes place this year on 21st March, encourages friends of Down Syndrome International all over the world to choose their own activities and events to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have the condition and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities.

Exeter Racecourse has launched a fabulous new art competition for children aged 11 and under with the overall winner featured on the front page of its racecard on Family Day, April 15.

We want children to come up with vibrant designs which depict the colour and vibrancy of a day at the races, from the brightly coloured silks worn by jockeys, to smiling faces in the crowds.

Slimming World Consultant Penni Ball has proved she's red hot after winning a Ruby Award for her work in helping tackle obesity in the area.

Penni who runs the Pinhoe Slimming World groups at America Hall, was delighted to receive the award for inspiring dozens of people in the local community to start losing weight and improve their health.

Furniture Village raises vital funds for Cancer Charity

Furniture Village stores, including the Exeter branch, have worked together to raise over £1,700 for a blood cancer charity.

In 2013 all fourty branches helped to raise vital funds for charity by putting sofa shaped collection boxes in their stores refreshment areas.

Work on to re-open the railway line could be completed earlier than expected, according to Network Rail. The work to repair the area of track destroyed during the recent heavy storms was initially expected to be completed by mid-March but was pushed back to mid-April after further storm damage frustrated repairs. Monday was a good night for Exeter Golf and Country Club’s men's and ladies tennis first teams.

The men beat Kingsteignton 8-1 thanks to a fantastic 15-13 win in a championship tie-break for John Wilton-Davies and Tim Agutter, coming from 9-4 down to clinch the deciding set.

EDDC wins pig farm appeal

East Devon District Council has successfully defended its decision to refuse planning permission for a pig unit comprising two buildings, slurry store, attenuation pond and access track at Collyhead Farm, Venn Ottery.

In a decision announced today (Monday 24 February), Planning Inspector Pete Drew concludes that the proposed development “would harm the character and appearance of this designated landscape”.
