Talbot just misses out on medal at National Indoor Championships

Exeter Harriers 15 year old Sam Talbot narrowly missed out on a medal at the National Indoor Championships at Sheffield. Talbot, now competing in the U17 age group, will this year be up against athletes a year older than himself. He entered three events, and was surprised to qualify for the semi finals of the 60m sprint, in which he came sixth with 7.31 having taken third place in his heat with 7.31. Talbot’s long jump of 5.95 gave him eighth place overall. Next was his specialist event, the 60m hurdles, which saw him run 8.42 in his heat for second place and secure his place in the final...

Harriers Under 17 Men’s Team win team gold at Westward League

Last Sunday Exeter Harriers took a team of 17 athletes down to Plymouth for the final Westward Cross Country League fixture of the season. Going into the event there was still were still overall positions up for grabs in the junior events.

Matt Dowell won his second Westward League race of the year to help the under 17 men finish 1st overall with a consistent set of results in a time of 21.29. This was also good enough for him to finish second overall in the individual standings. Matthew Penny was next home for the team, finishing in a league best position of 4th in 23.24.

Schedule delayed at noisy Exeter plant

Following last week’s steam blowing at the Exeter Energy from Waste plant, which generated significant noise, work is underway to mitigate the sound before the schedule resumes.

Before the plant can go into operation, steam is blown through the pipework to dislodge any grit or dust that could otherwise catch in the turbines. This is a completely safe procedure, and has to happen several times to ensure the pipework is completely clear. It does not form part of normal operating procedures.

Sidmouth's Beach Management Plan project team are holding a drop-in session at Sidmouth Sailing club next Thursday, 6 March, from 3pm to 7pm.

The public are invited to drop in at any time between 3pm and 6.30pm to learn more about the initiative, to give their views and provide local knowledge and information so the project team is properly informed.

The aims of the EDDC-sponsored project are to make sure Sidmouth's sea defences are performing as expected and to consider what needs to be done to reduce the rate of erosion at East Beach.

Topsham sandbags to be collected

People in Topsham are being asked to keep roads clear of parked vehicles when the City Council collects its sandbags on Friday (7 March). The bags were used in Topsham during the recent bad weather, helping to prevent more than 40 properties from flooding.

The local authority will be sending a lorry around to retrieve the bags from outside individual properties.

Residents can keep the bags if they wish but these will need to be taken inside or stored out of sight, otherwise they will be picked up by the Council.
