Children and families in the Barley Lane area of Exeter have an exciting new play area to help burn off those Easter egg calories. Labour pledge to bring back SW Minister

The Labour Party has revealed plans to appoint a new ‘Minister for the South West’ to support regional growth, if elected in 2015.

The plans revealed earlier today in a speech to the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) by Labour’s Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office, Michael Dugher, could see ministers appointed in each of nine regions.

A previous system of regional ministers was established in 2007 but was scrapped when the coalition government came to power in the appointment of new ministers after arguments that the positions lacked real power.

NFU: European vote paves the way

A positive vote by MEPs means the Government is a step closer in making key decisions on implementing the next CAP reform in England and Wales, the NFU said today.

The European Parliament Agriculture Committee last night approved the draft secondary legislation that underpins the implementation of the future CAP.

Exeter NHS centre to close for two days

The NHS walk-in centre in Sidwell Street, Exeter, will be temporarily closed on Wednesday 9 April and Thursday 10 April due to staff shortages at short notice.

The centre will reopen at 8am on Friday 11 April.

Patients will be signposted to the walk-in centre at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital or to call 111.

Kate Lyons, the Trust’s director of operations, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience the temporary closure may cause.

“Patient safety is paramount and we cannot operate the service without the appropriately skilled and experienced staff.”

Exeter Veterinary surgery to celebrate 10 year anniversary

Companion Care Vets, situated in Digby’s Pets at Home store, are celebrating their ten year anniversary by inviting 200 of their clients and suppliers to an open evening event.

The event will take place at the practice, in the Pets at Home store, and attendants will be treated to champagne, a charity raffle, music and much more.

Newtown's first Cycle Cafe of the year

Newtown Community Association will host its first community cafe of the year on Sunday 13 April.

The April cafe will be a cycle cafe at Belmont Hut in Belmont Park, Exeter and will be open from 2pm-5pm.

The event, in conjunction with Devon County Council, will include opportunities to get your bike checked by a mechanic, low cost reflective/florescent items, and free smoothie drinks thanks to a pedal powered smoothie bike.

Community Police Officers will be present to allow people to obtain free bike security marking as well as advice on security protection.
