Powderham Castle's next concert has been devised by Josie Walledge and is full of unexpected treasures!
Josie has assembled 10 superb singers for the largest-scale piece, Domenico Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater. It’s magnificent. It’s almost all in 10 independent parts, an absolute masterpiece of craftsmanship, creating a fascinating warp and weft of musical lines and textures. It’s accompanied just by continuo – cello and organ.
With so many voices available, an obvious next choice is a Bach Motet, Singet dem Herrn, a glorious 8-part piece, throwing two choruses from side to...
This Fathers Day is extra special as we are thinking of our Dads and remembering those who fought in the First World War 100 years ago, many of whom would have been fathers too.
The Royal British Legion have designed a commemorative banner that will be on tour around Devon to mark this centenary year. The banner will be on display at Powderham Castle on Sunday 15 June. Any visitors that wish to may mark one of the red silk poppies on the banner with a message about a family member who died in the 1914-1918 war, to help form a record of how the war affected the county.

“Working outdoors with the animals and being in the tractors ploughing the fields is what I always wanted to do,” she says. “But I thought that because I had no experience in farming that I wouldn’t be able to do the agriculture course and that I would look stupid not knowing anything about...
The Grand Western Canal’s 200th anniversary was celebrated in style at the weekend, despite heavy downpours on Saturday.
The Canal hosted the Inland Waterways Association’s National Trailboat Festival to mark the occasion – and there was an impressive response with almost 40 trailboats entering the festival.
Although the rain on the Saturday was a disappointment, it didn’t dampen the spirits across the whole weekend. The Canal Basin attracted a good crowd on Sunday as people flocked to see the boats and the boat handling competition, and there was a massive turnout for the...
