Exeter based GB star Charlie-Jane Herbert is keeping two hands firmly on her handlebars this weekend, as she lends a hand at a free Cycle speedway taster session. The youngster, who has represented Great Britain in Cycle speedway both in Australia and in the UK, is working hard to get more women involved in cycling, by teaming up with a selection of GB Cycle Speedway coaches, and other elite riders.

Devon building group expands services

A Devon building group has acquired a firm that adapts buildings for people with limited mobility, in a move to expand its range of services and secure local jobs.

Exeter-based Lea James Investments, which includes Devon Minor Works and Steve Coomber Decorating, has bought Gozna Services for an undisclosed sum in a deal supported by Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.

Gozna specialises in adapting homes and public buildings to make them easier to use by the elderly and disabled, including improving accessibility and customising bathrooms and kitchens.

Exeter students perform in Lord of the Flies

Two talented student-dancers from Exeter, James Leo and Matthew Hartley, have struck gold: landing themselves in renowned choreographer, Mathew Bourne's stage adaption of Lord of the Flies - which showed at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth from the 30th of April to the 4th of May.

The boys were picked out of six hundred local dancers from across the South West, who fought it out to gain one of the twenty places available in the highly acclaimed production.

Refunds for the cancelled final day of Devon County Show are now available on the organisers’ website. Organisers were forced to cancel the final day of the show on Saturday 24 May after mud and heavy rain raised significant health and safety concerns for visitors. Devon County Show Secretary, Ollie Allen said rain had turned the car parks into “quagmires” which saw organisers begin to turn away visitors from Friday afternoon. Bicton dogs jump for joy at County Show

Dogs from Bicton College showed off their moves last week with agility demonstrations at the Devon County Show.

The team which included three rescue dogs, tackled obstacles including jumps, tunnels and weave poles, demonstrating speed and skill in the Lady Clinton ring.

School joins tributes for young Exeter girl

An Exeter school has joined in paying tribute to the memory of a 12-year-old girl who died after falling from a wall at the Phoenix Youth centre in Burnthouse Lane. The girl, named as Nicole Hartup by police, is thought to have fallen from the wall whilst watching a football game with friends on Friday evening (23 May). Despite immediate care from Staff from the Youth centre and nearby sports centre, Nicole sadly died at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital later that night.
