Exeter 19-year-old on course to make first million

He’s already won a business award, taken on 25 staff and is heading for his first £1 million turnover. And now Chris Rundle’s company GK Signs is on schedule to sticker in excess of 8,000 vehicles this year for the likes of Thrifty Car and Van Rental and Hertz Rent a car.

And here’s the remarkable bit - Chris is just 19.

GK Signs was an ailing company turning over just £48,000 when Chris took over the Exeter-based firm in July 2011 - symbolically the day after he left school aged 16 with just three GCSEs.

Small businesses face unqualified ‘accountant’ risk

South West small businesses could be inadvertently damaging their growth prospects by paying accountants who aren’t even qualified, warns ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

The warning comes after research from cloud accounting software provider ClearBooksPro showed just eight per cent of small businesses considered an accountant’s qualifications when choosing one.

Hat-trick of sports projects for Honiton

There is £50,000 of sports money available to Honiton that will be used to deliver three exciting projects.

This is Section 106 sports money, collected by East Devon District Council on every additional dwelling created in the town. EDDC has a groundbreaking policy of spending this money through a process of community involvement.

Devon to consider new model for Youth Service

Devon could retain a professional youth work service and eight area-based youth centre hubs if new proposals are agreed by Devon County Council's cabinet next week.

If approved the plans could see local youth service hubs set up around the county to continue council lead youth work in the area.

While it is not yet a plan in place the eight local hubs are likely to be based in Exeter, Exmouth, Bideford, Barnstaple, Newton Abbot, Tiverton, Totnes and Okehampton.

Exeter hosts Devon Games to Inspire 2014

The Devon Games to Inspire 2014 (DGTI) will be held on Saturday 14 June at the Sports Park in Exeter on the University of Exeter Campus.

The games provide the opportunity for young people to compete in 11 sports and activities to win individual medals and gain points which will go towards the overall trophy for their area team.

The event which is part of the national Sainsbury’s School Games programme and it is expected that over 800 young people will take part from across the county.

Gannet sat nav reveals impact of fishing vessels

Fishing vessels have a far bigger ecological footprint than previously thought, according to research which tracked the movement and behaviour of seabirds using GPS devices.

A team of scientists led by the University of Exeter discovered that northern gannets change their behaviour in response to the presence of large vessels such as trawlers, suggesting each boat can significantly influence the distribution and foraging patterns of these and other marine predators.

Firefighters from Exeter called to a house fire in St. David’s this morning have confirmed that it was started deliberately. 3 fire appliances from Danes Castle & Middlemoor were sent to Mount Dinham at 8:38am following a request from the Police for their attendance to a fire in an electrical cupboard at a property. After investigating, fire crews confirmed that there was a small fire in a ground floor electrical cupboard, involving coaxial cable, newspaper and clothing. Lapford gardens open for Air Ambulance

Lapford & District Horticultural Society open their gardens on the 28 and 29 of June in aid of Devon Air Ambulance Trust.

Twelve unique parish gardens can be viewed including the school and allotments. Nine gardens are located in the village, with three about a mile away.
