Firefighers tackle hay fire at Nadderwater

Firefighters are tackling a large hay fire at Nadderwater, just outside of Exeter.

Approximately 56 large bales of hay were involved in fire.

Fire crews were called to Trillow at around 9.30am today (Tuesday) following a call reporting a large quantity of hay on fire in the open.

Two fire appliances and a water bowser from Danes Castle and one fire appliance from Middlemoor attended.

Upon arrival fire crews confirmed a large quantity of hay on fire.

Fire crews tackled the fire using one compressed air foam systems jet.

Perranporth murder appeal on BBC Crimewatch

The mystery surrounding the death of Alan Jeal in Cornwall will be featured on BBC’s Crimewatch programme in a national appeal for information five months on.

Alan’s body was discovered on Perranporth beach on Tuesday 25 February 2014 by a member of the public while out walking his dog at around 2pm. He was naked apart from wearing socks and one walking shoe.

Workshop will be a cut above the rest!

Learn to make hay in the traditional way using a scythe in a workshop organised by EDDC’s Community Development and Countryside teams.

This traditional tool has been used for hundreds of years to manage grasslands across Europe and is great skill to learn.

The workshop is on Tuesday 5 August from 10am-3pm at Honiton Bottom Nature Reserve and there is no need to book. Sunshine has been ordered for the day but cannot be guaranteed.

MP welcomes fairer funding for local schools

Neil Parish has welcomed the Government’s announcement that schools in some of the least fairly funded local areas in the country will benefit from a £390 million cash boost in the biggest step towards fairer schools funding in a decade. The schools budget in Devon will increase by £16.7 million making a real difference to children in Tiverton and Honiton.

Schools in Tiverton and Honiton will see their per pupil funding increase by 4.7% or £194.
