Enjoy a day in Devon and join Newton Abbot Racecourse for an afternoon of racing on Wednesday 13th August.

Racing for the day starts at 2:10pm and gates open at 12:10pm.

Tickets can be bought online at www.newtonabbotracing.com until 5pm on Tuesday 12th August. Tickets will be available to buy at the gate on arrival.

Tickets are priced at £12 for the Course Enclosure and £18 for the Paddock Enclosure. Children aged 16 and under and students with a valid photographic student ID / NUS can enjoy free entry.

Lights to go out across Exeter tonight

People in Exeter are being encouraged to switch off their lights tonight to commemorate the start of the First World War, 100 years ago.

As part of a nationwide commemoration, people are urged to turn off their lights from 10pm to 11pm, leaving only a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection.

Free bike security marking

Police are inviting cyclists to take advantage of a free bike security marking event near Chudleigh next weekend. Officers and PCSOs will be on hand at the main car park in Haldon Forest on Sunday 10 August to mark cycles, and offer crime prevention and road safety advice to riders. Exeter woman's record-breaking skydive

A professional skydiver from Exeter has been lucky enough to secure a place in a top World Record Attempt being held in California this year.

Maddy Heath Kelly, a newly qualified mental health nurse from Exeter, applied for the event back in June, but didn’t think she’d hear any more about it until an email came through a few weeks ago.

“It explained that I’d been selected as one of the ladies to represent the UK and I couldn’t believe it!” said Maddy, 26.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the First World War, an Exeter gallery is unveiling a miniature war sculpture that will also raise funds for The Royal British Legion. Castle Galleries, Exeter, will unveil ‘Never Forgotten’ by Nic Joly, a poignant commemorative piece to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. First Great Western have launched a photo competition to capture the beautiful scenery of the UK.

They're looking to see who can uncover some of the hidden gems of Exeter and the South West, or simply show the places you've travelled to by train this summer.

Family-friendly, yet traditional, the Dartmoor Folk Festival, which follows hot on the heels of the Sidmouth Folk Festival, will take place in the foothills of Dartmoor from Friday, August 8 to Sunday, August 10.

Police in Newton Abbot are appealing for information following an incident of indecent exposure in the town. The incident happened at around 8.45am on Tuesday 29 July within the grounds of All Saints Parish Church in Highweek. Police received a report from a female witness that a man had been seen standing within the church grounds performing an indecent act. He is described as white, in his early thirties, around 5ft 8ins, of athletic and toned build, tanned, with short dark hair. Funding for female entrepreneurs

Connecting Devon and Somerset – the programme that is bringing broadband to rural areas of the two counties – has won government funding to give broadband support to women in business.

The programme has won £75,000 in a successful bid to help women start and develop their own businesses using superfast broadband.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) team secured the funding after a bid to the Women and Broadband Challenge Fund that was announced in May by the Minister for Women Nicky Morgan who was also made Education Secretary in the last Cabinet reshuffle.
