DCF reaches £10m milestone and welcomes new chairman

Devon Community Foundation is celebrating having given more than £10 million in grants to over 6,000 projects helping local people in need across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay since its start.

Last year saw £700,000 in grants help over 55,000 people in need in the county. This year also saw the Foundation leap into action in response to flood and storm damage helping 119 individuals, 3 businesses and six community groups rebuild their lives after having been flooded.

Alongside this the Foundation has grown its endowment from £1.8 million to £4 million in just five years....

Songs from the Cathedral's North Tower

A quartet of Exeter Cathedral’s singers will climb the 175 steps to the top of the North Tower every day next week to entertain picnickers on Cathedral Green.

The singers will perform a short set at noon each day, and will sing a mix of sacred and secular music throughout next week (week beginning 11 August).

The North Tower of the Cathedral is 120 feet high and boasts spectacular views over the city and to Dartmoor and the coastline at Exmouth.

Visitors can go up the tower – the oldest part of the Cathedral at 900 years old - every half an hour through the summer...

A number of high profile businesses from Exeter and the South West will gather at award-winning Sandy Park this November, for the annual b2b@SandyPark exhibition.

Shop bought chickens test positive for Campolybacter

The Food Standards Agency has today published the first set of quarterly results from a new survey of Campylobacter, a food-poisoning bacteria, on fresh shop-bought chickens.

The results show 59% of birds tested positive for the presence of Campylobacter, which is considered to be responsible for more than 280,000 cases of food poisoning each year. In 4% of samples Campylobacter was also identified on the outside of the packaging.

Campolybacter is killed by thorough cooking, however, it is the most common form of food poisoning in the UK, affecting an estimated 280,000...

Summer at the Axe Estuary Wetlands near Seaton can only mean one thing – it’s time for the Wet ’n’ Wild Summer Festival on Saturday August 16, organised by East Devon District Council’s Countryside team.
