Burglary suspect arrested by dog team

A suspect has been arrested on suspicion of burglary following excellent work by a police dog and his handler. Police Constable Darryl Drew and Police dog Murphy were called to the scene of a burglary in progress in Danes Road, Exeter just after 9pm yestarday (Thursday 17 July). A victim had disturbed a man in his house who made off on foot.

The dog team on arrival located a scent and tracked to a rear garden in another property in Danes Road. They entered the property and located a male suspect in the kitchen. The man, aged in his late 30’s was arrested on suspicion of burglary...

Care staff hold falls awareness event

Staff from the Onward Care Service in Exeter organised an event to raise public awareness of falls and how to reduce the risk of falling.

The team ran a stand in the Oasis restaurant at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, where they are based, as part of Falls Awareness Week.

The staff, employed by the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and Devon County Council, linked up with colleagues from RD&E, the Acute Community Team (ACT), the Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) team and Exeter Community Hospital (Whipton).

Exeter Chiefs forward Don Armand is expecting a big improvement from his side when the 2014-15 Premiership season begins.

Sir David Attenborough is calling on the public to become back garden wildlife detectives this summer by taking part in the world’s largest butterfly survey.

Butterfly Conservation president Sir David will take part in citizen science project the Big Butterfly Count in an effort to count one million butterflies over three weeks of British summertime.

More than 46,000 people took part in the Count last year counting more than 800,000 butterflies and day-flying moths in their gardens, parks and local countryside.

Trust rears rare Devon species

A Devon conservation charity has taken another step to help save a threatened native species.

The Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, based at Paignton Zoo, has teamed up with the Environment Agency and Buglife to rear white-clawed crayfish.

The white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) is one of the largest freshwater invertebrates in the UK but is under threat of extinction in the wild because of the introduced North American signal crayfish, which out-competes its British counterpart for food and carries a killer plague.

Crime stats should not shift focus from victims

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg insists that persuading victims to report crime is far more important than presenting lower crime figures after the latest round of crime figures were released by the Office of National Statistics.

The figures confirmed that, while Devon and Cornwall has one of the lowest rates for serious acquisitive crime, the peninsula has high levels of reported of violent and sexual crime.

Fire crews tackle Beacon Heath blaze

Fire crews from Exeter were called to tackled a blaze at Galahad Close in the Beacon Heath area of the city this morning, after a report of alarms sounding and smoke issuing from a building.

On arrival, just before 1am, crews found a fire involving a chip pan in the kitchen of a flat.

One hose reel jet and a fire blanket were used to extinguish the fire.

Crews rescued one occupant from the flat, extinguished the fire and ventilated the property.

Severe weather warning for Devon

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning from tonight with lightning, hail and even possible tornadoes.

A spokesman said: "In this situation large amounts of energy are available in the atmosphere and this coupled with high moisture content can lead to torrential downpours along with frequent lightning activity, large hail and locally strong gusts."
