EDDC welcomes supercomputer

Last week's announcement that the Met Office plans to install a supercomputer in a new building complex at Exeter Science Park has been welcomed enthusiastically by leading members of East Devon District Council.

Part of the supercomputer will be sited at the IT Halls at the Met Office HQ in Exeter and part is expected to be sited at a purpose-designed building at the nearby Exeter Science Park, subject to planning permission.

New research from British Gas suggests that, unsurprisingly, many people in the South West (49%) are not looking forward to winter. People in the South West are most likely to dread increased transport problems (61%), shorter days (70%), the cold weather (62%), and the possibility of no heating or hot water (58%). Newcomer excited to be at Chiefs

Exeter Chiefs newcomer Byron McGuigan says he is “excited” by the challenges that lie ahead after he today confirmed his move to the Aviva Premiership club.

The 25-year-old, who has previously played for Border Bulldogs, Glasgow Warriors and, more recently, Bay of Plenty in New Zealand’s ITM Cup, has agreed a short-term contract with the Chiefs until the end of the current campaign.

McGuigan is the latest addition to the playing ranks at Sandy Park after head coach Rob Baxter previously indicated he was keen to bolster his options, particularly in the back three.

Increase in suicidal feelings among young

THE NSPCC has warned there has been a large increase in sucidal feelings among young people.

In a new report On the Edge, ChildLine reveals what it descibes as disturbing trends amongst young people in Britain.

A total of 34,517 counselling sessions were held by ChildLine (UK) in 2013/14 with children who talked about suicidal thoughts – a 117% increase since 2010/11.

Nearly 6,000 of these children had told a counsellor that they had previously attempted suicide - a 43% increase on the year before. The vast majority of these children had not revealed their feelings...

CAB concern over repossessions

Local charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, has identified a massive 56% increase in private sector tenant repossession cases. This is in comparison with the same period last year and shows that pressure on household budgets is biting harder than ever.

Across all housing sectors, where a CAB adviser has assisted clients facing repossession, clients have avoided repossession in 85% of cases.

Exeter City Council has provided financial support for this essential service.
