Blind war veteran to join Cenotaph march

A registered blind World War II veteran from Exeter, supported by Blind Veterans UK, is set to commemorate the sacrifice made by members of the Armed Forces when she takes part in the march to the Cenotaph in London for the first time this November. Gold rings stolen from Honiton home

Police are investigating a burglary where distinctive gold rings were taken from a Honiton home. Offenders forced a window to get inside the property in Oaklea while the owners were away between 13 and 21 October. They stole four gold rings which are old and of great sentimental value. One in eight women in the UK wrongly believes that a stroke could never happen to them, according to the findings of a poll published today by the Stroke Association(i). Devon County Council is inviting communities to work more closely with their library service, to have more say on how their local libraries are run.

The Council announced plans this month that aim to safeguard the futures of all 50 of its libraries, despite having to make significant savings due to reductions in Government funding.

Recent consultation concluded that most people understood the Council's financial challenge, indicating that they would be prepared to support their local libraries more, provided that professional staff were retained to run them.

Pensioner dies in A30 crash

A pensioner has died after his car left the road on the A30 near Ide.

Police say the 79-year-old man is believed to have suffered a medical episode prior to the crash.

He was airlifted to the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital where he later sadly died.

His next of kin have been informed.

Fire crews to strike this weekend

The Fire Brigade Union has voted to take a further four days of strike action in England (excluding control staff) in a dispute with the Government over pension reforms. Starting on 31 October at 18.00 hours until 4 November at 18.00 hrs

The issue continues to remain a matter between the Fire Brigades Union and Government. Devon Somerset Fire & Rescue Service has substantial contingency plans in place to ensure that it will continue to respond to emergency incidents throughout strike action.
