Gregory targets next generation during National Lorry Week

Devon based logistics business, Gregory Distribution Limited (GDL) will be using National Lorry Week (19-24 September) to recruit the next generation into the transport industry by staging two impressive vehicle displays in and around Exeter later this month.

There are plans to display a 44–tonne Gregory articulated lorry for two days at Exeter Services (20th and 21st) along with a number of vehicles from other South West transport businesses, and at Exeter City Centre’s Bedford Square on Princesshay (22nd and 24th).

SIGHT loss is costing the UK economy £28billion annually[i], a report from the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and Specsavers has revealed.

The State of the Nation: Eye Health 2016 report – which was unveiled at the House of Lords on 7 September – found the figure, which has soared from £22billion when last calculated in 2008[ii], could be significantly reduced by better public take-up of routine eye tests, and by earlier diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions.

Exeter academic warns UK mammals are under threat

The Mammal Society has been working with 52 other wildlife organisations to present the clearest picture to date of the status of our native species across land and sea.

The report reveals that over half (56%) of UK species studied have declined since 1970, while more than one in ten (1,199 species) of the nearly 8000 species assessed in the UK are under threat of disappearing altogether. New research reveals that just 12% of children in the South West are doing physical activity every day, with 50% of parents thinking that children should be properly fitness tested in schools.

Pupils swap pens and pads for pedal power

Pupils from Teignbridge schools have been keeping fit and swapping desks for bikes as part of a programme of activities geared up for the Tour of Britain’s visit to the district.

Funded by Teignbridge District Council, independent cycle trainer Martin Burrows visited youngsters from Teign School and Coombeshead Academy in the lead up to the Devon stage of the Tour. New Bus Station plans move forward

Plans for a new Exeter Bus Station have moved forward after councillors formally backed progress on the design of the project.

Councillors approved the work of the Project Design Team and agreed to proceed to the next stage and tender process, during a meeting at the civic centre.

The fourth quarter of 2016 has seen a boost of confidence in the South West with hiring intentions of +3%, according to Manpower, the world’s workforce experts.
