ExIST explores the impact of living with plastics

This month, Exeter Chamber subgroup, Exeter Initiative for Science and Technology (ExIST) held its latest event which focused on the extremely relevant topic of plastics and what impact plastic is having on the planet combined with the science, research and development of alternative materials and technology.

Speakers for the event included Dr Mark Hennen of ARGANS Ltd who are using novel techniques to establish the feasibility of observing floating plastic litter from orbit. The results of their research in this area will aid in the locating and tracking of marine plastics. Also...

RD&E is one of first NHS trusts awarded Veteran Aware accreditation

As the nation marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital has become one of the 24 acute hospital trusts in the country to be accredited as a Veteran Aware hospital.

Hospitals accredited by the Veterans Covenant Hospital Alliance (VCHA) will lead the way in improving NHS care for veterans and members of the armed forces community by:

Chartered accountants PKF Francis Clark have appointed a new Partner, Karen Bowen at its Exeter office. The promotion brings the total partnership to 55 with the firm now employing over 700 staff across the region.

Police appeal for witnesses to attempted robbery in Exeter

Police are appealing for witnesses and information following reports of an attempted robbery in Exeter.

The incident is reported to have happened on Tuesday 30 October between 5.30pm - 5.45pm in the area of Ferndale Road and Sydney Road, St Thomas.

Three young female victims were approached by a male who demanded money from them. The male stated he had a knife however no knife was seen. The male assaulted one of the victims and the walked off empty handed in the direction of Barton Fields.

Description of the male was that he was aged in the region of 16 to 18 years...

Giraffe death shocks zoo

Staff and volunteers at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park have been left shocked by the sudden death of male giraffe Yoda. The 14-year-old northern giraffe was found collapsed in the giraffe house early this morning.

Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling said: “This has come as a huge shock. He was a noble animal, one of the best-known and best-loved characters in the Zoo. There was no warning. People are in tears.

“It’s a big blow, but when you work with animals you have to deal with the low points as well as the highs.” A post-mortem examination will be carried out by the Zoo’s...

Armistice 100 - medals auction brings brothers back together at last

Two brothers killed during the First World War have been reunited on a War Memorial just in time for the 100th anniversary of the end of the war.

The medals had been awarded to the Hine brothers, who lived in the East Devon village of Awliscombe, and came in to Chilcotts Auctioneers to be sold.

Research carried out by Chilcotts uncovered the fact that although both were killed during the First World War, only one brother was commemorated on the War Memorial in the village.

Private George Hine of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment, was killed at the age of 24...

Urban designers David Birkbeck and Stefan Kruczkowski joined Barratt Homes at Minerva in Exeter to celebrate the five star housebuilder’s 60th anniversary.

David has been CEO of Design for Homes since 2000 and he wrote the Building for Life matrix which is tool used to assess new build applications and is currently working on an updated version to support the National Planning Policy Framework.

Exeter businesses go bonkers conkers

There’s nothing like a competitive game of conkers and teams taking part in the annual Brewin Dolphin Bonkers Conkers event in Exeter were certainly in it to win it.

Taking place at Lloyds Lounge, different businesses were competing – all of them keen to take home the coveted King Conker trophy. For the uninitiated, conkers are the seeds of horse chestnut trees and the traditional game is played between two people who each have their selected conker on a strong piece of string.
