A determined buyer travelled from North West Germany to Honiton to secure his bid on the 19th century portrait of a Prussian Grand Duke.

Dr Johann van Lengerich learned of the sale of the portrait at Chilcotts Auctioneers from the internet and was so keen to purchase it that he made the journey on the day of the auction together with his young son.

It transpired that his wife and son are direct descendants of the Grand Duke. The family had previously tried to buy the painting when it was auctioned at Christies but on that occasion, they were unsuccessful. Instead, the Grand...

The Innovations behind LOWA Military Boots

Established in 1923 by Lorenz Wagner, LOWA started out as a small Bavarian manufacturer of Oxford Brogue shoes. Handcrafting their footwear using the Norwegian welt-stitch, by the end of the decade LOWA’s reputation had grown to the point where supply could no longer meet demand and their manufacturing facility had to expand. Jump forward to the present day and the brand’s growth has lost none of its momentum. Having shifted their focus from formal shoes to more practical footwear during the 1960’, the 1970s and the 1980s, LOWA’s use of the latest innovations have led to them becoming a...

Northampton 2 City 1

Exeter City suffered back-to-back defeats as goals from Aaron Pierre and Andy Williams condemned them to a 2-1 defeat at Northampton Town.

The Grecians, who struggled to create chances in the first half, were much better after the break and pulled a goal back through Aaron Martin but couldn’t find an equaliser.

City manager Matt Taylor made four changes from the side that lost to Tranmere Rovers last time out as Jonathan Forte, Alex Hartridge, Aaron Martin and Nicky Law all came into the team at the expense of Pierce Sweeney, Randell Williams, Lee Holmes and Donovan Wilson...

With teeth like that, it’s hard to believe Western lowland gorilla Kiondo is a vegetarian. The 15-year-old, who weighs in at around 186 kilos and lives at Paignton Zoo in Devon, has an impressive set of gnashers.

He was spotted displaying to keepers and to his fascinated public by photographer and Zoo regular Miriam Haas.

Kiondo enjoys a diet of vegetables, including peppers, sweetcorn, tomatoes, chicory, cabbage, kale and lettuce. The giant vegetarian sets a fine example when it comes to healthy eating – though his table manners leave a little to be desired.

Rita, Sue and Bob Too

Friday & Saturday, Exeter Northcott

Best friends Rita and Sue get a lift home from married Bob after babysitting his kids. When he takes the scenic route and offers them a taste of adult adventure, the three start a fling each of them think they can control. Told with wicked humour, startling insight and a great ear for dialogue, Andrea Dunbar’s semi-autobiographical play is a vivid portrait of girls caught between brutal childhood and an unpromising...
