Rope sculpture unravelled in exhibition on campus

Devon’s ancient pathway, the Mariners Way has been the inspiration for local artist Edward Crumpton, whose work is being exhibited at the University of Exeter from 27 April until 9 June. A sculpture to celebrate the social history of this almost mythical walk was produced last year for the University. Entitled ‘Mariners Way’, the huge knotted rope sculpture now stands proudly outside the entrance to the Forum building. Thomas Hardy: the man behind the classics

Thomas Hardy is one of the West Country’s most famous writers whose novels, such as Far from the Madding Crowd and Tess of the D’Urbervilles are internationally renowned. As part of a project to promote knowledge and understanding of Hardy, Dr Angelique Richardson of the University of Exeter is organising a series of lectures in collaboration with the National Trust and Dorset County Museum, where the talks will be held. Exeter students reach global final of Microsoft App competition

A team of students from the University of Exeter have come first in the national heat of the Microsoft Imagine Cup, an international student technology competition in which students develop their own apps from scratch.

Local school children get closer to nature

Last month over 200 school children braved the winter snow and rain to join the South Devon National Trust Rangers for their fortnight of schools activities.

Year 5 and 6 pupils from seven local schools travelled to the National Trust sites at East Soar Farm and Wembury beach, where stream and pond dipping, gorse cutting and scavenger hunts were all on the agenda.

University of Exeter law students have been awarded the prize for Best New Student Pro Bono Activity by the Attorney General Dominic Grieve QC MP for its legal helpdesk that provides assistance to court users.

The Community Legal Helpdesk is run by Law students who are supervised by a qualified lawyer, providing free information and guidance to members of the public involved in legal disputes. Family, small claims housing and employment problems are the most common queries.
