What Makes the School Leavers Experience So Important for Students Today

Leaving school is strange. One day you're sitting in a classroom that's been part of your daily routine for years, and then fairly suddenly, it isn't. No dramatic ending, no clean break, just a gradual realisation that something significant is coming to a close. For young people in the UK today, that transition has become one of the most emotionally loaded periods of their lives, and the way they mark it says a lot about what this generation values.

More Than Just the End of Term

It would be easy to dismiss the school leavers period as simply the end of compulsory education. Tick...

The Chancellor has announced that all limits on university recruitment will be lifted in 2015. This unexpected decision means that universities will be allowed to recruit as many students as they want to.

Describing it as an “arbitrary cap on aspiration”, George Osborne announced that an extra 30,000 places at English universities will be created in 2014-15. The following year, the current cap on student numbers will be abolished entirely. He told the Commons that: “it makes no sense that we have a lower proportion of people going to university than the United States, let alone...

Recent research done by The Sutton Trust reveals that 28% of students at Exeter University are privately educated.

While investigating the education gap between poor and privileged students at English universities, the Trust found that, unsurprisingly, Oxford and Cambridge had the highest percentage of privately educated students, with 46.6% and 42.7% respectively.

This contrasts with London's South Bank University, which came last in the listing. Nearly a quarter of the students there received free school meals at school, compared with a tiny 1% at Exeter. This suggests...
