Exeter College has launched Devon’s first Women’s Cricket Academy based at a non‑fee‑paying college, offering an exceptional new opportunity for young female cricketers to develop their cricketing potential alongside their academic studies.

Ahead of a busy summer season the side is actively recruiting new players. This will begin with trials on Thursday 30 April at Buzz About Cricket’s indoor facility in Cullompton, and aspiring players joining the College this September are now being encouraged to register their interest.

Over the next four years, world class athletes will be supporting over 2,300 young disadvantaged people in Devon.

The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, founded by double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes, has been working in Devon for several years now.

Youngsters from Teignbridge performed superbly at the Devon Rotary Youth Games in Okehampton on Sunday 3 July.

The South West’s biggest annual youth sports event saw over 2,000 youngsters from across the county, along with representative teams from Cornwall, take part in 20 competitions across 12 sports at Simmons Park, Okehampton.

Teignbridge placed 2nd overall and 3rd in the Fair Play award. They also won a large number of medals, including gold in cricket, mini tennis, girls football, boys hockey and high 5 netball.

Tour of Britain launches in Devon

Devon school children received a very special preview of the Tour of Britain on Monday (4 July), cycling the start and finish of the Devon stage with a British cycling pioneer and an aspiring professional.

On Friday September 9 2016, the world’s top cycling teams and riders will race from Sidmouth on the East Devon coastline to the summit of Haytor on Dartmoor in Stage Six of the race.

Exeter Chiefs newcomer Greg Holmes says he is “excited” by the challenge that lies ahead as he prepares to join up with the Aviva Premiership club in the coming weeks.

The 33-year-old prop is one of three new faces set to arrive at Sandy Park this summer, having been recruited by head coach Rob Baxter from Australian Super Rugby side, Queensland Reds, ahead of the new 2016/17 season.

New outdoor festival launches with most iconic trail

A new outdoor festival with one of Britain’s toughest trails is promised to be one of the highlights of the South west festival.

The running event is to take place in the heart of Heddon Valley in North Devon this September 23-25.

Exeter Quay will once again be host to the City of Exeter Rowing Regatta on Saturday 9 July for a full day of sprint racing at the historic quayside.

Callington and fghan United were the winners in Exeter City’s community football tournament held on Sunday (3 July). Nearly 200 local players took part.

Callington won the Women’s competition, winning every match they played. They beat Tedburn St Mary based Inter M’Ladies 5-1 in the final. In the semi finals Callington defeated the All Blacks from South Devon 2-1 and Inter edged out Buckland, also by 2-1.
