Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

Entrepreneurs can pitch ideas about a new concept or product and begin creating their own business at an event, later this month in Exeter.

Startup Weekend, a 54-hour event, will help people develop solutions and ideas that have the potential to make a positive difference to society.

The weekend takes place from 17 to 19 November 2017 at University of Exeter’s Business School and is open to anyone with a novel product, idea or code - with the drive to turn their ideas into a startup business.

A musical gala not to be missed

Tickets are still available for Saturday’s (November 18) Classics Galore! concert at the University of Exeter Great Hall.

There are more than 100 seats (£12-£18) left in the main auditorium with just a few remaining in the gallery and boxes (£15-£24.50).

It is one of the most eagerly awaited events on Exeter’s musical calendar with a total of 200 musicians including a symphony orchestra, brass band and chorus performing popular classics with a flag waving, sing-a-long Last Night of the Proms style finale.

New equipment at Exeter skate park

There’s good news for skate fans with new, temporary equipment installed at Exeter Arena Skate Park.

Work is ongoing but some of the ramps will be available to use this weekend.

Exeter City Council is carrying out the work with Tim Ruck of the Boarding House. When finished the facility will include:

• A flat spine • Wall ride • Grind block • Sub box

Local BMX riders have contributed a flat rail to the park.

Recently the City Council was forced to break up the old skate park on the same site after the equipment had become rotten and dangerous....

Primary school stories enthral

Talented writers from Ottery St Mary Primary School made judging a hard task in a competition organised by local coffee shop, Tickety-Boo.

Children were asked to write a story on the theme ‘My Tickety-Tastic Summer Holidays’.

Around 30 entries were received from schoolchildren in Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Amongst the many wonderful stories were tales of pixies, kittens, dogs, a missing snow wolf and a jungle tour in Thailand.

Thank you so much to our amazing Big Beacon Clean Team - you did an amazing job! Our lovely Beacon Community Centre in Beacon Lane, Exeter, is now safer, brighter and cleaner.

The steps and paths are jet washed, windows cleaned, the kitchen cupboards and main storeroom have had a good clear out, the giant hedge lowered and the weeds have gone!

This was our second BIg Beacon Clean - we're aiming to hold one every three months, to keep the place in good condition to welcome the hundreds of people who visit every week.

Dartmoor riding stables wins prestigious tourism award

Hard work, dedication, wonderful horses and spectacular scenery have earned Babeny Farm Stables in Dartmoor a prestigious award at the Herald Express South Devon and English Riviera Tourism and Hospitality Awards.

Proprietor Dee Dee Wilkinson was presented with a Silver in the Tourism Event or Sporting Activity category at the ceremony which was held at the Riviera International Conference Centre last week.

Twelve fire crews tackle thatched property blaze

Fire crews are in attendance at a property in Copplestone following a call from the owner saying there was smoke in the kitchen and flames could be seen outside.

The blaze started at 5.06am today (November11) at the thatched house in Clannaborough, Bow, Between North Tawton and Crediton.
