Work to start on Heavitree Road bus improvements

Improvement work to enhance bus services on Heavitree Road in Exeter will get underway next month (February).

The scheme, which will start on Monday 2 February, involves the construction of a new traffic island and installation of a new set of traffic signals at the end of the outbound (eastbound) bus lane between Grendon Road and Polsloe Road/Barrack Road.

An official ceremony has been held to mark the re-opening of the A379 at Slapton.

Dr Sarah Wollaston MP was among the guests at the event, which was well attended by representatives from the local community and local businesses. Devon County Council Chair, Councillor Caroline Chugg, unveiled an interpretation panel detailing the timeline for Slapton, including the repairs which have been delivered. Princesshay has announced five top street performance acts to appear at its late-night shopping Thursdays.

The illuminated entertainment will bring the centre to life with jaw-dropping aerial acrobatics from Heliosphere and the incredible light-up drummers, Spark.

Cycle club takes fundraising efforts to new heights

An Exeter cycle group has raised record amounts of money for its chosen charity this year.

The BGE Cycling Club has donated £2,018 to FORCE Cancer Charity from various activities throughout the last 12 months.

Club members gathered at the charity’s headquarters for their final Cadence Café ride of the year when they presented a cheque for £1,725, plus money raised on the day and topped up to match the year - 2018.

For the 12th year running, Exeter Phoenix are inviting people to take part in a free 48 Hour Film Challenge. No previous filmmaking experience is needed – just a good imagination and a camera. Teams will be given a theme, a prop and a line of dialogue before setting off on their mission. The challenge will take place between 9th-11th November. The challenge is part of Two Short Nights Film Festival, Exeter Phoenix’s annual celebration of all things short film. Scorching Summer Reading Challenge results revealed as Devon and Torbay’s library staff come together for second annual staff conference and AGM Over 12,000 children and young people in Devon took part in the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge, with a record number of participants completing the Challenge by reading six books during the summer holidays.

Devon's gritters heading out as temperatures fall

Devon’s gritters were out in force over the weekend after being called out for the first time this season.

With road surface temperatures set to drop even lower tonight, Devon County Council’s gritters will be out across the county’s main roads again from 7pm this evening and then monitoring conditions overnight.

Temperatures are due to fall below -3C on Dartmoor tonight and are expected to be lower than -2C in northern Devon and the South Hams, and they may not get above freezing until after 9am tomorrow.

The parents of a Devon boy who died from flu in January this year say they are overwhelmed by massive public support for their vaccination campaign, and are urging people to keep spreading the message.

Influential film critic Mark Kermode has been appointed as an Honorary Professor at the University of Exeter.
