EGGHEADS from Devon can test their general knowledge and help raise money for good causes in the area during a quiz night being held at an award-winning pub in the county this month (December 2018).

The charity quiz takes place at The Swan in Bampton on December 23 in aid of the community’s primary school and to help pay for repairs to the village’s Riverside Hall’s flat roof.

Co-owner of the award-winning pub and Chef-Patron Donna Berry, who runs it with her husband and fellow chef Paul, said: “We host regular monthly quizzes but our Christmas one is always a bit special and we want to invite people along to test their general knowledge!

“This year we’ll be raising funds jointly for two local causes close to our hearts: Bampton Primary School and to help repair the flat roof of the village’s Riverside Hall. The evening starts at 8.15pm, after the carol concert in St Michael’s church, which is just behind the pub, on Sunday, December 23. Up for auction on the night too, in aid of our two worthy causes, is a signed shirt from Exeter Chiefs.

“We have a maximum of six people per team and entry costs £2 per person. It’s a fun evening out with friends or family members over a pint with a dash of healthy competition on the side! We hope lots of regulars and new faces join us for the event to raise lots of money for our two worthy causes, but we do recommend that anyone wishing to take part gets here early.”

The Swan, which is an AA Four Star Gold Inn and is the oldest pub in Bampton, was named as one of the top 50 gastropubs in the country for the second year running this year. It is also in the ‘Estrella Damm’ Top 50 for 2019 and will find out where it has been placed in January.

Donna was a finalist in both the Devon Life and Trencherman Awards in the Best Chef of the Year and Best Chef categories this year too.

The pub has scooped a plethora of other awards for its food in the past few months and years including most recently being named Gold Tourism Pub of the Year 2018 at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards, voted Best Dining Pub for 2018 in the Trencherman Awards. It also has two AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence, which it has retained for the fourth-year-running.

The Swan’s annual charity Christmas Quiz takes place on Sunday, December 23 from 8.15pm. To find out more, please call 01398 332248 or visit www.theswan.co.
