Local disability support service awarded £5,000 from The Cadbury Foundation

Local disability support charity, Community Equality Disability Action (CEDA), has received a £5,000 donation from The Cadbury Foundation, thanks to the support of local Mondelēz International employees in Crediton.

CEDA, which is a Devon-based charity dedicated to promoting the social inclusion of people with physical, sensory or learning disabilities, was selected by employees based at Mondelez International’s Crediton site, as part of The Cadbury Foundation’s annual ‘Your Charity, Your Choice’ programme.

Diabetes UK looking for swimmers in Devon to make a splash in charity challenge

People from Devon are being invited to dive into a sponsored swimming challenge and raise vital funds for Diabetes UK.

Swim22 runs between 22 July and 22 October and involves swimming a total of 22 miles – the equivalent of crossing the English Channel. Participants can take on the challenge at their own pace, accumulating the miles across the course of the 12 weeks.

All funds raised will go towards Diabetes UK’s work in funding life-saving research and making sure everyone living with diabetes gets the care and support they need.

His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales met transport workers and Exeter’s ‘Net Zero Heroes’ during a visit to the new Exeter Bus Station.

Prince Charles met long-service bus drivers and discussed their work over the pandemic during the visit to the new Exeter Bus Station, which will open to the public on Sunday 25 July.

The Prince also heard from apprentice builders and staff involved in the construction of the neighbouring St Sidwell’s Point leisure centre, which will open later this year.

Exeter to benefit from Western Power Distribution’s Net Zero commitment

Western Power Distribution (WPD), the electricity distribution network operator for Exeter, has announced that it has signed up to the United Nations’ Race to Zero campaign – the largest ever global alliance committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 at the latest. As part of WPD’s commitment to net zero, Exeter will benefit from funding to support green energy schemes.

With its Race to Zero pledge, WPD has committed to go even further and faster and become a carbon neutral business by 2028 - 22 years ahead of the UK Government and UN’s targets.

Twin doctors graduate from Exeter together after training during pandemic

Twin brothers Adam and Jack Tremlett have defied the odds by graduating in Medicine at the University of Exeter together.

Adam and Jack, from Ivybridge in Devon, marked their graduation in gowns at a special celebration for Medicine students this week, though a formal in-person graduation ceremony has not taken place this year.

Exmouth RNLI called to rescue person taken ill on broken down rib

Exmouth RNLI volunteer crew launched this afternoon to rescue an individual who had broken down on a rib off the coast of Exmouth.

At 4.26pm today Saturday 17 July 2021 the crew of Exmouth RNLI Inshore Lifeboat D-805 George Bearman II were tasked by H.M. Coastguard to attend a report of a lone individual in distress on board a rib with engine failure drifting of the coast of Exmouth at Littleham Cove. The occupant of the boat had made several unsuccessful attempts to restart his engine for some time.

MP and St Loyes Councillors call for urgent review on “disaster waiting to happen” cycle lane scheme

Simon Jupp, MP for East Devon, along with St Loyes councillors on Exeter City Council, are calling for a re-think of a cycle lane scheme on Russell Way.

Concerns have been raised by residents following the introduction of cycle lanes on both sides of Russell Way heading into Clyst Heath.

The road is also open to traffic from both directions which often leads to cars having to cross into cycle lanes on either side which raises concerns about the safety of both cyclists and road users.
