Exeter ranked move-friendly city

Exeter has been named one of the UK’s least stressful cities to move to, thanks to strong infrastructure, good housing availability, and ease of access to short-term services.

In a new national study released by Pay Less for Storage, Exeter scored 74 out of 100 in the “move-friendliness” index, ranking joint 10th alongside Inverness, Lancaster and Ripon. The research measured practical relocation challenges like van hire access, local self-storage options, chain-free housing stock, and the availability of short-term rentals.

Arts organisations share funding in Exeter

A number of exciting and emerging arts organisations in Exeter are among those set to benefit from City Council funding.

Kaleider, Double Elephant Print Workshop, Le Navet Bete and Sound Gallery are all being earmarked for core arts funding from Exeter City Council.

The groups have never previously received core arts funding and along with Exeter Phoenix, Exeter Northcott, Theatre Alibi, Bikeshed Theatre and Spacex are being recommended a share of the core arts funding pot for 2015/16.

A hairdresser who graduated on an apprenticeship before opening her own salon seven months ago is now looking to mentor a trainee herself. Work to start on Topsham Road junction

Work to tackle congestion and improve safety at a busy junction in Exeter will get underway on Monday (28 July).

The £180,000 scheme will simplify signal arrangements and improve crossings at the junction of Topsham Road, Southbrook Road and Tollards Road. As well as improving safety, this will aim to stop rat running on the service road, prevent red light running, and maintain capacity for citybound traffic on Topsham Road.

Introduction to painting wildlife

Visitors to the Axe Estuary Wetlands near Seaton will be familiar with the work of accomplished local artist and illustrator Mike Hughes, as it adorns the ceiling and walls of the Information Centre there.

Mike has exhibited at the Artists for Conservation Annual Gala, the Mall Galleries, The Royal West of England Academy, South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts and at the British Bird Fair.

Pets at Home Exeter is holding a workshop to provide pet owners with top tips on how to protect their pets in the sun and heat this summer.

The event is taking place on Saturday (26 July) at the Pets at Home store, Rydon Lane, Exeter between 1pm and 2pm.

Living Coasts penguins fly East

Living Coasts has sent 20 penguins to Eastern Europe as part of a major new initiative. The coastal conservation charity has donated the birds to Tblisi Zoo in the former Soviet republic of Georgia to start a brand new colony.

Living Coasts Operations Manager Clare Rugg explained: “They have built a penguin exhibit from scratch with our advice and input – we have been working with them because they have just joined EAZA, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, the body which represents top zoological collections across Europe. This is the first EAZA move to Georgia.”
