New children's library opens in Exeter

After months of building work, the new children’s library in Exeter is now open to the public. The Clore Children's Library features a brand-new sensory area, a floating mezzanine and activities for older children. Designed to be welcoming and accessible to all children and families, and championing interests, passions and their imaginations.

In the aftermath of the tragic death of Robin Williams, a course has been organised in Exeter to help people to undertake training to learn how to identify and support someone in emotional distress.

The actor’s suicide was a shock to many who thought him a successful, happy man, and the fact that even his close family had no inkling of his intentions serves to highlight how depression can so easily be hidden from view.

Police appeal to trace missing woman

Police in Torquay are appealing for information to trace a missing woman. Martine Blaire was reported missing on Tuesday 19 August from Torquay. She is considered vulnerable, and she hasn’t been seen for 10 days although police did make phone contact on 27 August. Martine is described as being, and white woman, aged 35 years, approximately 5ft 3in in height, slim build with shoulder length brown hair sometimes in a pony tail.

She was last seen wearing a Khaki coat jeans and trainers.

Estimated times: Tour of Britain Devon stage

Devon will be beamed live to a worldwide TV audience when the Friends Life Tour of Britain races through the county on Thursday 11 September.

The race will again be broadcast live on ITV4, with ITV showing the opening Stage One from Liverpool.

The Devon Stage, hosted by Devon County Council and sponsored by South West Highways, will be Stage Five of this year’s Tour, covering 110miles (177km) of the county.

The Riviera Cafe Bar in Teignmouth is the new host for the Teignmouth and Dawlish Social Media Cafe being held on Wednesday 3 September. Social media experts will be gathering upstairs at the venue to support local businesses and community organisations.

The social media cafe runs from 5pm to 7.30pm and provides a free drop-in event where people can pick up tips and hints on using social media, ask questions, meet other like-minded people over a cup of coffee or a beer.

A teacher of British Sign Language (BSL) at Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education has won a regional award from UK charity and leading awarding body in deaf communications, Signature.

Matt Jenkins, who is from South Wales but now teaches sign language in Exeter and Bristol, is the recipient of the South West Teacher of the Year Award at the 2014 Signature Annual Awards.

Ashfords people are taking up bee keeping in a bid to help the national initiative to protect bees and boost their population

Many of the world’s most important crop-producing countries will be fully saturated with pests by the middle of the century if current trends continue, according to a new study led by the University of Exeter.

More than one-in-ten pest types can already be found in around half the countries that grow their host crops. If this spread advances at its current rate, scientists fear that a significant proportion of global crop-producing countries will be overwhelmed by pests within the next 30 years.
