Ottoman beds provide the perfect solution to sleeping in style and keeping your bedroom clutter-free with their hidden storage compartments.

An ottoman bed has a wooden base that lifts on hydraulic pistons to provide access to a storage compartment inside. The lift mechanism is typically located at either the end or side of the base to suit any bedroom layout.

But with so many options for lift mechanisms, sizes, and price tags, choosing the right ottoman bed can feel overwhelming. Don't lose sleep over your decision – our guide covers everything you need to know when buying an ottoman.

Bed size: Can you fit a larger ottoman?

The first thing to decide is what size ottoman bed you need. Ottoman bases come in all standard bed sizes - single, small double, double, king size and super king. Measure your mattress width to check what size frame you need.

While you don't have to buy a new mattress, upgrading to a larger bed size is worthwhile if space allows. For example, many people with a regular 4ft 6in double mattress find that a 5ft king-size ottoman takes up only a little extra floor space. The generous proportions are more relaxing and comfortable to sleep in.

Lift location: How is your bedroom laid out?

Ottoman lift systems are either located at the foot or the side of the bed base. Side lift ottomans allow access from both sides but can limit bedside table space. End lift mechanisms maximise floor space around the bed.

Think about which lift location best suits your bedroom layout and where you have space for bedside furniture. Some ottoman frames allow you to assemble the lift at either the end or side, providing flexibility.

Storage depth: Do you have bulky items to stow?

Check the storage depth of any ottoman you're considering. Depth typically ranges from 20-30cm, although some models offer over 35cm depth for maximising storage capacity.

The deeper the storage, the more you can fit in. With 30cm depth or more, you can stack spare bedding and still have room for other items. Just be aware a deeper base also means a higher overall bed height.

Is the headboard included?

While the base and lift mechanism are integral parts of any ottoman bed, a headboard isn't necessarily included. Some models require you to buy the headboard separately.

Always check what's included before buying and double-check the specifications to avoid assuming a headboard comes included.

Wood or fabric?

Wooden ottomans are made from solid pine, oak, or wood veneers, mimicking the appearance of a traditional bed frame.

Fabric ottomans have upholstered headboards and sides - the base is still wood but gets covered in thick, padded fabric like velvet or faux leather for a soft, luxurious look that can match existing bedroom soft furnishings.

Which you prefer will depend on your decorative style and preferences - wood makes a striking, contemporary centrepiece with its sleek lines, while fabric offers a plush, cosy finish that blends into a more traditional bedroom theme.

What's your budget for a new ottoman?

Ottoman beds are typically 30-50% more expensive than basic divan sets—however, the price difference between ottomans and divan and drawer sets is around half that.

Budget circa £200 for a cheap ottoman and up to £600-£700 for a higher-end model with more storage depth.

You can save money by waiting for sales if you have time on your side or buy directly from the manufacturer to save on reselling fees. Sites like eBay and Amazon can have high prices due to taking a cut from the seller’s sales.

Summing up

Focus on choosing the right bed size, lift position and storage depth for your needs. Check what's included in the package, shop for the best prices, and look for discounts to pick the perfect ottoman bed for your bedroom.
