Find World Book Day costumes for free in Devon libraries

Libraries Unlimited is partnering with Recycle Devon to bring World Book Day costume swap rails to 15 libraries in Devon. World Book Day 2026 is Thursday, 5th March and library swap rails are running from 16th February to 8th March. Customers are invited to donate outgrown, unwanted children’s costumes in good, wearable condition. Costumes will be available to take home for free!

Funding boost for NEET Families

The families of some of Exeter’s young NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training) are to benefit from over £24,000 sponsorship provided by the Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT), a specialist awarding body offering vocational qualifications.

The money will enable eight parents and carers of Hair@theAcademy students to study a Level One Course in Hair and Beauty at the training salon based within Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education.

University strike causes wide-spread disruption

The University of Exeter alongside other UK universities will face widespread disruption today in a co-ordinated strike action by the UCU, UNISON and Unite trade Unions. Classes have been cancelled as staff have said they will walk out in protest of pay condition. Unions have argued that despite an increase in University income and many institutions building up large cash reserves staff pay has fallen in by 13% in real terms since 2008. Church school celebrates after being declared an outstanding school

An East Devon Church school is celebrating after being declared an outstanding school.

Otterton Church of England VA Primary School was upgraded from good to outstanding in the latest report by the National Society Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools.

Headteacher Carron Saunders said: “We are delighted. There is a lovely ethos here, our children are spiritual, thoughtful and caring and we see that on a day to day basis. It’s good to see it recognised by an outside body.”

Children from across Devon got the chance to learn about where their food comes from yesterday at the special Farm Wise event organised by Devon County Council. Held in Exeter’s Westpoint Arena, the event saw the Council’s Tenant farmers and students from Bicton College give workshops on food, farming and animal care. St Leonard's first to reach Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme Grand Final

St Leonard's Primary School are the first to book their place in this year’s Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme Grand Final after they took the honours in the opening festival of the year held at Sandy Park.

The Exeter-based school were one of 18 that have been visited by the Exeter Chiefs Community department since the start of the season to take part in the five-week programme, which will introduce over 36,000 young people to the sport through tag rugby.

£14.2m funding to nurture next generation of arts and humanities researchers

The South, West and Wales Consortium, in which the University of Exeter is joined with seven other universities – Aberystwyth, Bath, Bath Spa, Bristol, Cardiff, Reading and Southampton – has been awarded £14.2 million funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) over the next five years to deliver postgraduate supervision, training and skills development from 2014.

The consortium is one of 11 new Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) and seven Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) to have been awarded a total of £164m funding from the AHRC.

Sidmouth Primary School pupils put their Planning hats on...

Twenty pupils from Sidmouth Primary School had a go at taking Planning decisions when they visited East Devon District Council.

The seven-year-olds, with their teacher Mrs Hammond, spent a morning at EDDC’s Knowle headquarters learning about Planning and Development as part of a school topic. They received help and guidance from council staff and from Councillor Christine Drew, EDDC Member Champion for Children and Young People (see photo).

Exeter City Council announces free dyslexia screening sessions for adults

Free dyslexia screening will be available to adults next week at Exeter City Council's Customer Service Centre.

The screening sessions are being provided by Exeter-based company, Cinnabar, which specialises in helping adults with dyslexia throughout the South West.

Sessions will be held on 15 and 16 October during Dyslexia Awareness Week (14-20 October) at the Council's Customer Service Centre in Paris Street, Exeter. The sessions are free but by appointment only, so anyone interested needs to book a place by calling 01392 357501.

Exeter College students take part in MOD training exercise, Operation 'Short Sermon'

On Wednesday 2 September, five Exeter College media students took part in a training exercise designed to test Plymouth City Council and the MOD’s contingency planning.

The exercise, codenamed Short Sermon, tested the reactions of these organisations and local authorities in the event of nuclear reactor accident.

During the day around 27 separate groups, including students from the College, took part in playing and responding at operational, tactical and strategic levels across Exeter, Plymouth and Truro.

Devon six-year-olds above national average in phonics results

National, regional and local authority results for the phonics reading check and key stage 1 results have been published by the Department of Education.

The results for Devon show that 73% of six-year-olds in state funded schools (including academies) reached the expected level, four percentage points higher than the overall figure for schools in England. Those who did not achieve the expected level will be offered additional help from teachers to enable them to "catch up".

By year 2 the number of children who reached the expected level in Devon rose to 87%.
