Let there be light! Exeter Scientists urging us to Race for Life

This group of researchers from Devon are leading the way in transforming how cancers are detected and treated by harnessing the power of light.

The team, who receive funding through Cancer Research UK, are encouraging people to take part in Race for Life this summer and help fund more life-saving research.

Their innovative use of Raman Spectroscopy, which is based upon the interaction of light with the chemical bonds within a material, is forging a better understanding of treating cancers earlier.

Charity chief executive Simone Enefer-Doy made a pit stop at Buckfast Abbey in a classic Rover as part of a road trip with a difference in a bid to raise the profile of little-known children’s charity Lifelites. The challenge - dubbed A Lift for Lifelites - asked for lifts through every county in England and Wales, taking in nearly 50 famous landmarks en route in just 14 days.

CEDA enabler Andrew White excelled in the military but shortly after achieving his goal of being accepted into the elite unit Coldstream Guards he suffered an injury that ended his Army career.

At the 2017 Invictus Games he cycled his way to gold in the men’s road cycling IRB 3 criterium. He crossed the line in a time of 28 minutes 21 seconds to take first place. Andrew has been selected to represent TeamGB again in the 2018 Invictus Games taking place in Sydney Australia.

Across Exeter and Devon sewing machines have been put into action to help young girls get a better education.

Seamstresses of all levels have been busy making reusable sanitary towels to help combat the ‘period poverty’ suffered by girls in Buburi, a remote community in Western Kenya.

Friends of Buburi, an Exeter based charity, has been helping to provide sustainable, affordable healthcare in the area for over 13 years with a particularly strong impact on pregnancy and neonatal care.

As part of the national 100th anniversary commemorating the end of WW1, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity are staging a special concert at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday 16th June, 2018.

Local Devon-based charity, Veterans With Dogs, has signed the Armed Forces Covenant, witnessed by Johnny Mercer, MP for Plymouth Moor View.

The Armed Forces Covenant focusses on helping members of the armed forces community have the same access to government and commercial services and products as any other citizen.

RGB Building Supplies is delighted to announce it raised a fantastic £10,634 for its chosen charity Children’s Hospice South West over the past 12 months.

Disability charity CEDA goes green

Exeter based charity CEDA (Community, Equality, Disability Action) is the latest South West organisation launching a new ‘go green’ initiative, raising awareness of small changes that can be made to help protect our planet.

CEDA delivers education and social opportunities with disabled people and works with over 150 individuals each week. The charity employs 90 staff and volunteers each of whom are being encouraged to make small changes one step at a time.
