Devon quartet aiming for a world record

Later this month, four Devon men will be heading for Dover from where they will attempt to break a world record.

All four have completed solo Channel swims.

Now they aim to work together in medley-order, each specialising in a different stroke.

To claim the world record they will have to beat the current time of 11 hours and 29 minutes.

Months of training at sea and in pools has given them the confidence to know they can beat the record.

David Walliams will be revealing an intimate secret with some of his closest celebrity friends in a sketch recorded for Comic Relief - Funny for Money (Friday 15th March, BBC One).

Exeter's church leaders to show off their baking skills

As part of a national charity campaign Exeter’s church leaders are battling to show off their baking skills.

The contestants will be baking their best bread under the watchful eye of the BBC’s Judi Spiers and local baker Emma Parkin of Emma’s Bread, a finalist in the 2012 Devon Life Awards.

Bishop Michael of Exeter, Methodist District Chair Rev Peter Pillinger, Canon Rev Ian Morter of Exeter Cathedral and Southernhay URC Elder Sabrina Groeschel will bring their best recipes to the Cathedral Green at 3.30pm on Monday 11 March for an outside bread bake off.

Xpression FM to host charity football match

The second annual Xpression FM Charity football match is taking place on Sunday 17 March.

The match is being held on the Rubber crumb at the University of Exeter Sports Park and will feature a team of pundits from the University’s radio station taking on a team of University staff including lecturers and SABBs.

The event will raise money for the Adam Stansfield Foundation, a local charity set up in honour of the former Exeter city striker who tragically died of bowel cancer in 2010.

Local charity benefits from Lord Mayor’s Valentine Ball

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Rob Newby, accompanied by the Lady Mayoress hosted a Valentine's Masquerade Ball at Exeter Castle on 15 February 2013, in aid of his chosen charity, SOCOPS. Guests were welcomed by Miss Charlotte Ward (Regional finalist in the TeenStar Talent Competition) who along with her keyboard entertained the guests before dinner. Following that and an auction, the guests tried their hand at the fun casino and danced the night away to the well know local band, ‘Thick as Thieves’ followed by DJ Ben Fayter.

This is your chance to have the experience of a lifetime and make a difference to someone else's.

You will learn survival skills such as husky driving, ice fishing, cross country skiing, shelter building and more on this eight-day Arctic adventure which takes place in Sweden in March 2014. Call for volunteers to take part in Superhero Skydive

Skydive UK and Age UK Exeter are putting on a Superhero Skydive and we need your help. We are looking for 10 volunteers to tandem jump from 15,000ft to raise vital funds. You can jump for free if you raise £395 in sponsorship and you will also get a DVD of your skydive at half the normal cost. BBC Radio Devon presenter David FitzGerald will be taking part in the Hospiscare Men’s Walk this month as part of his intense health and fitness campaign.

FitzGerald, who presents the interactive lunch, has been challenged by the BBC’s ‘Inside Out South West’ to take on a new healthier lifestyle. The DJ, who had been a stranger to exercise untill recently, has decided to walk the 10 kilometer route for the local charity as part of his new fitness regime.

Hospiscare calls on ladies to walk under the stars

With the Hospiscare Men’s Walk only a couple of weeks away, the charity has announced that registration opened on Thursday 28 February for the Ladies’ Starlight Walk.

The event, which is taking place on Saturday 11 May in Exmouth, has a new name, new route and new start time but the same feeling of togetherness, as ladies raise money for the charity which provides end of life care for patients in Exeter, mid and East Devon.

Exeter Chiefs and Exeter College students get baking for Red Nose Day

Three members of the Exeter Chiefs took on the challenge to bake and decorate 1,000 cup cakes to show their support for Red Nose Day 2013, and inspire everyone to get out the cake mix to raise money.

Today (Thursday Feb 28) prop Carl Rimmer and hookers Jack Yeandle and Chris Whitehead rose to the occasion and made more than a half-baked attempt at cooking Red Nose Day inspired cupcakes to encourage the people of Exeter to raise funds with their own baking skills on Friday 15 March.
