Exeter Chiefs and Exeter College students get baking for Red Nose Day

Three members of the Exeter Chiefs took on the challenge to bake and decorate 1,000 cup cakes to show their support for Red Nose Day 2013, and inspire everyone to get out the cake mix to raise money.

Today (Thursday Feb 28) prop Carl Rimmer and hookers Jack Yeandle and Chris Whitehead rose to the occasion and made more than a half-baked attempt at cooking Red Nose Day inspired cupcakes to encourage the people of Exeter to raise funds with their own baking skills on Friday 15 March.

And after a morning’s baking with Exeter College catering students, including Emma Wakeley, Bertie Skinner, Fenella Gibson and Sam Passmore, they raced around town selling their wares to local office staff to try and raise as much money as possible for both Red Nose Day and Restart – the charity that supports ill and injured players. The event was supported by Sainsbury’s and is in association with Silver Spoon.

Baking is a key ingredient of this year’s Red Nose Day fund-raising efforts, with bake-sales and coffee mornings tasty ways to make money for those living incredibly tough lives in the UK and Africa.

Baking guru Mary Berry, who is leading the call for everyone to fundraise through their culinary efforts this Red Nose Day, said, “Here's my secret ingredient for raising lots of money for Red Nose Day: Cake - Get baking and invite your friends and colleagues to a cake sale, coffee morning or tea break and if you’re looking for inspiration pick up The Great Comic Relief Bake Off book from all good book retailers or rednoseday.com/shop.”

If you’ve been inspired by the teams’ results, you can get a slice of the action by holding your own bake sale and raise a tasty sum which could help vulnerable and disadvantaged people right here in Exeter, across the UK and Africa. To download your bake off kit, visit rednoseday.com/bake now.
