Red Earth Developments announces the appointment of Devon Contractors as the main contractor for the conversion of the former River Yealm Hotel, Newton Ferrers, South Hams into luxury accommodation.

Red Earth gained planning permission in 2017 for this high design-led project of six spacious lateral apartments, plus an additional eight contemporary dwellings and a single striking house, all overlooking one of the loveliest rivers along the South Hams coastline. The site includes a woodland which, following years of neglect, will be managed with a replanting programme spanning over 20 years.

Simon Friend, Director of Red Earth commented: “Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo are absolutely stunning villages and among the most un-spoilt in Devon and all of our properties will have captivating views of the estuary - it promises to be the most significant development in the village for decades.  We’re restoring the elegant building, which is a local landmark, back to its former glory, with refurbishment and an element of new-build, designed sensitively and sympathetically.  It was therefore imperative to select the right builder for this once in a lifetime project.” He adds: “We are delighted to have contracted Devon Contractors, an independent company with longevity having been established in Exeter for over 70 years.  With an excellent reputation Devon Contractors prides itself on employing local people, using local suppliers and sub-contractors, and choosing projects that will benefit the local area. This collaborative company culture makes them the perfect partner for us on this special project.”

Devon Contractors established in 1946, have built on their long-standing reputation for delivering high-quality buildings on time, and within budget.  They carry out minor and major works, including new-build across a range of sectors up to a value of c.£12million, working primarily across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.

Peter Alderson, Construction Director – Devon Contractors said: “We are absolutely delighted to be appointed as the main contractor for this unique project located in an area of outstanding beauty. Our ethos is to use local subcontractors and suppliers wherever possible; not only does this keep investment in the local community, but also reduces the impact our construction activities have on the environment.”  He commented further: “Timescales are on target for completion in summer next year.”

Exeter-based Grainge Architects are leading the design on this project, having worked with Red Earth Developments from initial conception, through the planning process and to production of construction information. Director James Brookes commented “Sites within such beautiful settings, together with a client who is committed to high-quality, non-rapacious development are not common.  This project offers a unique opportunity for architecture which is both innovative and responsive to the sensitivities of the neighbourhood, local residents, ecology and landscape”.

Leading South Hams’ Estate Agent Marchand Petit are marketing The Yealm and a show-flat will launch in spring 2019.
Andrew Biggs – Marchand Petit concludes: “We are pleased that a contractor has been appointed and that work on this exclusive development is now underway.  We look forward to the continued success of the development and to the show home launch early in 2019.  We’ve been delighted with the level of interest to date and know this will only escalate as Devon Contractors bring the scheme to life.
