Plans for Radio 1’s Academy revealed
BBC Radio 1 and BBC Learning have announced plans for BBC Radio 1’s Academy - a month of free outreach activity across Exeter and Teignbridge in the run up to BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend that aims to inspire local 16-19 year-olds to take the next step in creative careers.
Now in its fifth year, Radio 1’s Academy will include a series of special events, local engagement and face-to-face activity in the area, which begins in Teignbridge in April and culminates in Exeter in May with a week of radio shows, gigs, practical workshops and Q&As.
More details about the Exeter events from 17th-21st May, taking place at Exeter Phoenix will be announced soon.
The first set of events are due to take place in Teignbridge from Monday 25th April and will give local young people the opportunity to engage with Radio 1 DJs through a range of activities.
In addition to the programme of outreach sessions throughout Teignbridge and Exeter, Radio 1 and BBC Learning will be offering Academy attendees the chance to apply to be a part of the Big Weekend team at Powderham Castle, with work placements in areas such as broadcast, live music and artist liaison. Monday 25th April – A Day In the Life of Radio 1
The first of the events will commence on Monday 25th April at Hannahs at Seale-Hayne, with Radio 1’s Dev hosting a ‘behind the scenes’ Q&A session with his production team giving participants an insight into what a typical day in the life of a Radio 1 show is really like.

Tuesday 26th April - Special Guest Q&A and Performance
Hosted by Radio 1’s Dev, students of Coombeshead Academy in Newton Abbot and other schools and colleges in the Teignbridge area, will have the very special opportunity to learn all about the music industry through a Q&A with a special guest of Radio 1, as well as being in the audience for an exclusive live performance.
This is an invite only event.
Tuesday 3rd - Friday 6th May - BBC Radio 1 and BBC Learning School Tour
Radio 1 and BBC Learning will be embarking on a schools tour from Tuesday 3rd May. Along with other Radio 1 talent, 1Xtra presenter Mim Shaikh, originally a participant at Radio 1’s Academy in Hackney in 2012, will be visiting schools and colleges in Devon, letting students know about the Academy and all it has to offer, as well as giving a personal insight into working in radio.
Monday 9th May – In conversation with Radio 1’s Annie Mac and Charlie Sloth
On Monday 9th May at Pavilions in Teignmouth Radio 1’s Annie Mac and 1Xtra’s Charlie Sloth will take to the stage to deliver very personal insights into their careers and share their knowledge of the music industry.
Their talks will be followed by a Q&A hosted by Radio 1’s Adele Roberts.

Monday 9th May - BBC Introducing Gig
BBC Introducing will present an evening of live music at Pavilions in Teignmouth with local artists Robyn Sherwell, Reigning Days and Auction for the Promise Club performing.

Monday 9th May – Behind the Scenes of a BBC Introducing gig
During the technical set up of the BBC Introducing gig, attendees will have the opportunity to shadow staff and learn skills essential to sound engineering, lighting production, stage management and artist management.

Radio 1’s outreach activity will take place in the lead up to Big Weekend - the station’s flagship live music event. Hosted by Radio 1 DJs, Big Weekend is Europe’s biggest free ticketed event and has an unrivalled reputation for attracting live performances from some of the biggest and freshest UK and international acts, bringing the nation together for a shared live music moment. Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2016 will be taking place at Powderham Castle on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May.
50,000 tickets were snapped up last week in just over an hour, with more free tickets than ever available to local people living in Exeter and Teignbridge with the lucky ticket-holders set to enjoy performances from the likes of Coldplay, Ellie Goulding, The 1975, Chase And Status, Bring Me The Horizon, Craig David and Jake Bugg.
The line-up for Radio 1’s flagship music event will be revealed during the Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Monday.
