The contract to refurbish Newton Abbot’s Market Walk shopping centre has been awarded to South West construction company Classic Builders, who have offices in Exeter, by Teignbridge District Council.

The shopping centre, which was acquired by the council in 2016 in a record deal, will be transformed to offer a ‘brighter and lighter’ shopping experience which the council hope will, ‘attract locals and visitors to the heart of the town.’

Council leader Jeremy Christophers believes the work marks the start of a “new dawn” for Newton Abbot: “As a council we are committed to delivering great places to live, work and visit and this project demonstrates there’s a bright future for our principal town in Teignbridge and its community.”

Adam Brimacombe, the Director at Classic Builders said, “As a South West business we are proud to have been awarded this contract. We look forward to working with Teignbridge on this project and creating an environment which will modernise the centre.”

Classic Builders have previously worked on large projects such as Buckfast Abbey and retail refurbishments for Plymouth City Council.

Some of the work being done on the centre includes; the removal of the current concrete entrance and the installation of a new glass roof running from Courtenay Street to Market Street as well as glass roofs for some shops.

Work will start on the 19th of February and will last eight months, while all shops in the centre will remain open, some disruption is expected.
